Me and my fiancé enjoyed our stay everyone was friendly and knew everyone
As soon as we walked in we both got a warm feeling knowing that we are going to enjoy our stay
Great little hotel with lovely atmosphere.
Very friendly and clearly a hit with the locals as well.
Enjoyed a one night stay with breakfast for a reasonable price, nice clean, comfortable room with balcony.
Nice food especially the Thai menu. Very friendly staff who are working very hard.
A very pleasant, small hotel with good food.
I'll likely pay more to stay elsewhere next time.
After a 3 hour drive at the tail end of a working day I was looking forward to comforts away from home.
On arrival, there was nobody at reception. I found someone at the bar to check me in. Nice enough chap and very pleasant, but I was given conflicting information. He gave me a room card and said I was in a room different to that written on the card holder... both rooms were on different floors and after 2 failed attempts I went back downstairs and met with an apology and told a different room number again. 15 mins to check in to a small hotel and 3 room attempts later I was in. Sleeping area was good and clean. The bathroom was tired and in desperate need of some love. A bath with a hole in it (no not the plug hole) had been repaired with sealant. Bath edging that was cut incorrectly and peeling away from the bath. No plug for the sink and the plug for the bath didn't fit the sink. Double glazing needs looked at, I could hear passing traffic with them shut almost as loudly as when they were open. Went downstairs to order food, tasted great and timely arrival. Would have been nice to have had condiments brought to the table.
Response from hotel
Hello and thank you for your review. The room chosen was our very cheapest room at £41 per night so is the most basic accommodation that we do offer. The room you were given on the night is the next to be fully refurbished and work on the room is due to start this week. We do offer more expensive rooms which have already been refurbished which can be selected at the time of booking.

As someone who stays in hotels 4/5 nights a week all over the UK, the Highfield really didn't deliver what I'd expect from £75 for a nights B&B in the North East.
On arrival I had to wait a while for the person serving in the bar to finish their task before checking me in, this was the same for check-out. My room was on the second floor, very spacious. The hand towels are presented on the bed along with soap and individual sachets of shower gel and shampoo. This is a new one on me, which was quite frustrating when, like many people, the first thing I do when entering a hotel room after a long drive is go to the loo, then have to go on a hunt for the soap and hand towel. The bed itself was very uncomfortable with individual springs digging into me. Be aware of road noise if you book this hotel, there is a busy dual carriage-way to the rear and the windows aren't noise-proofed. I had to leave before 7am so didn't get to try the breakfast. Overall I wouldn't stay here again, I'd go to the nearest Premier Inn with a comfortable bed and a smaller bill.
Nice hotel, very friendly staff, good Thai restaurant on premises.
Clean - However cold and the decour needs an update
The food in the Thai restaurant below however is excellent.
