About the hotel

Nestling within sight of the open sea at the mouth of the tranquil Camel Estuary, Padstow, in Cornwall, has always been a thriving fishing port and commercial centre for north Cornwall. At the heart of the town and overlooking the medieval harbour is the Old Custom House, it is still one of the finest buildings in the town and is now a stylish and intimate place to stay. It is famous for its fine food, award winning ales, elegant, intimate accommodation and for its luxurious Beauty Studio.

Each of the 23 en-suite boutique bedrooms have been stylishly decorated, blending character with contemporary design. Guests can choose from a selection of rooms, with views over the town harbour and Camel Estuary beyond. All rooms boast contemporary en-suite, WIFI and divinely comfortable Vi-Spring beds. Offsite parking is available at additional cost. Padstow is renowned for its restaurants and fine cuisine and our own Pescadou restaurant is a jewel in the crown. Fashionably blending ancient with modern design, Pescadou caters for every eventuality from the celebratory dinner to the casual lunch. Using fresh local produce and fish often straight from the quay outside, the restaurant offers an extensive menu of fish and seafood dishes complemented by a fine selection of wines. We also serve stylish pub grub in our large traditional bar with award winning St Austell Brewery ales. The Old Custom House offers live entertainment in our bar and it’s only a few minutes walk away from Padstow’s bustling centre alongside Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant.

Having stayed here before, I considered myself lucky to get a booking for the Easter bank holiday.

Let me start by saying, the location is what this Inn is all about. The harbour area is literally outside the door. Although the Inn has no parking, there is a car park opposite but you better get there early or very late. (£7 for 24 hrs). Don't be fooled by the " modern" rooms,a lick of paint over peeling paper ( which was peeling the last time we stayed), does not make something "modern". The rooms are clean and tidy, end of. Don't be fooled into paying the extra for a sea view, car park view is what you get but to be fair you probably get a worse view from another room. We stayed in room 3 and this is next to the main stairs and landing door, with the beauty room opposite, this obviously gets busy and therefore noisy. We were very didisappointed with the first breakfast, we sat there for 15 minutes before anybody came to us. People that came in after us were eating before we even got coffee, it wasn't until I asked that we got noticed. The menu is very limited and it took a further 35 minutes before we were served a very bland and not particularly well cooked full English, although the second days breakfast was cooked better. (Different chef ?). Since our last visit they have changed the layout of the pub area in the lower part and in my opinion this has lost its character but it has obviously increased the earning potential. Since we have got back, I have looked at various options for future visits and for the high price we paid there are definitely better options. There are several nice places to eat and drink within yards of this Inn, so shop around. Overall, location good but we came away disappointed, we will be back but not to the old custom house.
