The City Gate Hotel
This hotel seems to be a bit run-down at first glance but, knowing that a major refit is intended for early in 2017, criticism is inappropriate.
The friendliness of the staff team and the enjoyable breakfast, coupled with some obvious furnishings' upgrades already in place bode well for this establishment in the future. Even today, I would simply note that "what you see is not what you get. You get much better than at first glance."
Beautiful garden with fountain and lounges.
Nice and cosy lounge inside and a good bar. We had a wonderful big room with king size bed, the guesthouse is close to High Street with all its shops and restaurant. Close to Exeter central train station and 15 minutes walk to coach station.
Worst place i have ever stayed
Unfriendly, unwelcoming staff.
Over an hours wait for food so I had to go out to find something. A dirty iron ruined my work shirt, no hot water in the morning and un-edible breakfast. The manager did give me some money back in fairness but it was still a horrific stay.
A plesent stay
A very nice and clean room, when i am in Exeter i will always try to book this hotel.
The City Gate Hotel
Very clean comfortable room.
Friendly staff and nice breakfast. Beer garden very nice indeed. Would definitely recommend this hotel.
Citygate is excellently situated in the centre of Exeter close to all amenities and central attractions.
The welcome was laid back. No obvious reception.visitors need to report to the end of the bar. It is a working and well-used pub with room above. Our twin room was spacious and comfortable, very clean and quiet. Some of the furniture had seen better days but the beds large singles and the bed linen immaculate. The bathroom was well-appointed, the towels were pristine and the hot water plentiful.. The sink tap need refixing securely but was serviceable. The full breakfast was of average standard but acceptable. It was served in the bar area and so there was the expected lingering aroma of the previous night's beer. However the service was prompt careful and cheerful. The hotel was only too happy to store our small amount of luggage whilst we spent the morning in the town prior to departure. Despite first appearances. It turned out to be a good blind choice and we would use again.
The City Gate Hotel, Iron Bridge, Exeter
We were really pleased with this hotel, the room was lovely, clean and cosy, and the bathroom was nice too.
Its location was perfect for us to go shopping and out for a meal. It also had a lovely courtyard to have an evening drink in. The manager told us on leaving that it was due to undergo an expensive refurbishment, in my opinion, that is not necessary, it is lovely just the way it is.
A great find and highly recommended.
Will stay there again.
Excellent location in the heart of Exeter
This is really a pub with rooms, an old style Inn with bags of character.
The staff are friendly and efficient and the breakfast is good. The place needs updating, especially the bedrooms but I understand this will happen soon. Enjoyed our stay and would happily return.
