The Carew Arms
Excellent Stay At Carew Arms.
Really enjoyed our night at the Carew Arms. The hosts were extremely friendly and welcoming. Pub is very old (500 years) and therefore the floors and stairs are very lopsided. But this added to the whole experience. The room we stayed in was very small but comfortable even though the bed seemed smaller than a standard double we still slept very well. The room was very cold when we first entered as they have no central heating and due to the age of the building. But the electric heating did a fantastic job at keeping us warm. The breakfast was by far the best full English I've had, at a hotel, in a very long time. Highly recommend for a budget night away in a beautiful part of the world.
A lovely place to stay in the heart of the Quantocks
We stayed here recently for a couple of nights and would not hesitate to stay again.
I think of this as a local's pub. It's quite basic but comfortable. We spent the first evening in the bar. There is a good range of local beers which at about £3.50 a pint are pretty reasonable. The staff and the locals we talked to were all very welcoming. The public bar has a wood-burner but the bar itself is quite small. The other bar is more a bar-cum-dining room/restaurant and even though one of the rooms has a bio-mass pellet boiler, I felt the bar lacked a little atmosphere. The room was a good size, although I found the bed uncomfortable due to a protruding spring in the mattress. My wife on the other hand, found the bed very comfortable. So be careful which side you choose!. Wifi is available but we couldn't access it from the room, so had to go to the bar. Maybe this is a marketing ploy. ;)
What I did find strange was that even inside the room, I could get 4G mobile coverage whereas, where I live in suburban Surrey, even 3G is a struggle OUTSIDE. Breakfast was more than adequate. I didn't have a cooked breakfast but my wife was impressed with hers and commented on how nicely cooked and presented it was. Of course, the pub is located in the Quantocks on the edge of Exmoor and has some fantastic walking available. All in all, we enjoyed our stay and will probably stay again next time we are in the area.
