Lived up to expectations.
Staff excellent and very friendly. Food was good. It wasn't expensive for Edinburgh given its central location.
Top Quality experience
A top quality hotel offering a first class service, very pleasant staff and excellent food in a quiet setting close to the city centre.
This is our regular hotel of choice in Edinburgh and it never fails to provide a top rate experience. We look forward to our next visit.
it was too far out and hotel had too many stairs
the first morning for breakfast we had to wait for tea for 10 mins.
the next morning sat we waited 15mins for toast. service not good. staff not pleasent. as i am a cook and cook for 75 kids they couldnt get a breakfast right for 15.
This hotel is a great little find, within walking distance of the city centre.
The walk is about 15 minutes and takes you straight into the west end. Alternatively you can take a slightly longer route down Raeburn road which has lots of lovely independent shops. The hotel is 5 house knocked through so navigating to your room took a little while for me to get used to. My room was on the top floor and the room was a great size, but the floor was a little uneven making the bed not quite level. The bar area was very welcoming and the food was superb, although the menu was not massive the food and the service was great. I was travelling alone and didn't feel uncomfortable at all. Breakfast was a choice of continental or cooked and again the food was superb and also the service. The only negative is the parking, if you are bringing a car you can only park it for 4 hours before technically having to move it. This is only during the day between 8.30-5.30. So you couldn't really go into the city centre and leave your car all day. There are of course longer stay car parks but nothing that close.
Comfortable hotel in great location
We spent 6 very enjoyable days in Edinburgh and the setting of this friendly hotel made it easy for us to walk everywhere in this lovely city.
Huge bed and spacious room (rather underlit), nice places to sit downstairs. Staff extremely helpful. Food nice (6 breakfasts, 3 suppers) though not outstanding and could do with more choice for vegetarians. Bedroom needs bigger teacups. We liked seeing all the Shackleton memorabilia and Victorian prints on walls.
Very welcoming hotel and is oozing class as soon as you open the reception door.
The staff are extremely helpful. The room was absolutely spotless and couldn't be faulted. We had a light meal on the Friday night this was also fab. Breakfast was lovely and plenty choices.
I would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone looking to stay in Edinburgh for any reason, I will be back for sure.
This hotel was warm and inviting.
Throughout our stay the staff were always friendly and attentive and made us feel very welcome. Kevin in particular was wonderful. Our room was very comfortable and clean. We would definitely stay here again.

Really lovely old fashioned hotel
A step back in time to a golden age of customer satisfaction and quality.
A proper old-fashioned hotel experience and like stepping into an old book with all the depth pf character of an old master: fabulous!
Alternative to the normal chain hotels
Very good quality hotel in a nice part of town.
Great value for money.
