A Gem in Glasgow
An excellent value for money, the staff were friendly and courteous.
Advised where best to park your vehicle to get best price. Breakfast was good with a good choice. Room was clean and modern
Value for money at the last minute.
Missed out last train home, so we looked for the cheapest available room that also looked the part.
Very clean room, easy booking and a good wee breakfast in the morning -sorted. Only con was that the bathroom had no safety features, no mat in the bath to stop you from sliding or even anything to hold on to. The room was completely tiled and after shower was pretty dangerous. Other than that, it was a lovely stay.
Hotel Review - Alexander Thomson
I've stayed here before on business, mainly for the location.
It is very close to where I need to be. My room (203), wasn't so great this time around. I found the bathroom very odd. The toilet was on a raised plinth so that when I sat on it, my feet were dangling mid-air. Not comfortable, and a bit dangerous. The shower had no way of maintaining the temperature – it was just on or off. I just got under when it was cold, and after about five minutes it got hot. I didn't wait to see if it would scald me. Carpets were a bit sticky, but the bed was comfy, and even though the room faced Argyle Street it was quiet. Breakfast was adequate and buffet style, though bacon so salty it was inedible. As I was dining alone, I found it a bit annoying that the staff kept whisking away my plate (with food on it) when I went to get a cup of tea or something.
It was a Pleasant surprise to find a cheap room that is of high quality.
I had a good stay and breakfast is good!
Great value for money
Passed this hotel many times and it doesn't look much from the outside but inside it's fine and just as nice as some other more expensive hotels in Glasgow.
Receptionist on arrival was friendly and got us checked in. Room was spacious and clean - nothing fancy but all we needed for a bed for the night after a gig. My only negative is that the windows weren't very sound proof so you could hear the traffic from Argyle Street fairly clearly early on. Would stay again though for the price we paid.
We were put in a room over the front entrance which proved to be extremely noisey not only by some of the other residents smoking, talking and laughing until the small hours but we awoken by a demolition crew working in the area at 6am!.
Obviously on the 6-2 shift!.
Breakfast was ok but only fried eggs available ( no scrambled or boiled).
Could do with investment
Not a great first impression as the receptionist's attitude was best described as 'nippy', almost to the point of rudeness.
I found that surprising. The public rooms were quite well decorated and carpeted, but the bedrooms really need upgrading. No double glazing means there is a fair bit of street noise, including the bottle bank being emptied at 6a.m. One of my colleagues found that his room smelled of smoke and that the window was jammed with packets of teabags - presumably to stop it rattling if the wind was blowing. Another colleague found that her radiator wasn't working - not great for a stay in November. The showerhead was tiny and water pressure on the 5th floor wasn't brilliant, although the water was nice and hot. Bed was comfy enough, and it was great to have a good choice of tea, and decaff coffee as well. The hotel is certainly very central with a good choice of eating places nearby. I might stay again depending on prices of other accommodation in Glasgow at the time, but I wouldn't place colleagues here again.
Alexander Thomson Hotel
Happy with everything.
Only negative was the window kept banging when closed, the room was like an oven so we had to sleep with it open all night which isn't the best idea in a city, so much noise. Overall would stay again, as £50 for a night & breakfast is a winner!
