Misconception of a hotel
The problem with Ashley House is that it calls itself a hotel and not a hostel thus producing an image of an establishment where there is some degree of care for the guest beyond provision of a room and a breakfast.
We arrived and found the room as suggested. It was in the basement and smelt of damp. In the morning one could see why. We went to breakfast at 8.10 next morning to be greeted by a cook who made it clear that we should get out skates on as she had to be off at 8.30. This was clearly a mistake in the briefing letter but not expected in a hotel. The meal was the type, using cheap ingredients , that I remember from the 70s when one could have fruit or juice but not both.
Overall an establishment charging as a cheapish hotel but offering no service beyond a hostel.
We do not accept that we offer no care to our guests beyond provision of
room and breakfast. Although we are not a "meet and greet" establishment,
we are always available by telephone to answer any queries from guests and
can have a housekeeper on-site within a few minutes if required. We make
it quite clear to guests before arrival, that there is no hotel reception,
so there can be no misconception. We have no bedrooms in the basement and
the smell in this instance was from fresh paint, as some decorating had just
been finished on the day the guests arrived.
Our usual weekday breakfast time is 7 - 9am, but during the week in
question, our regular cook was on holiday and the temporary cook did have to
depart at 8.30am. We did apologise to the guests, as the information sent
to them did indicate that breakfast would be available until 9am. However,
the cook did provide breakfast before departing and the family were able to
remain in the dining room after her departure to complete their meal. The
remark about the quality of the breakfast ingredients is most surprising, as
the overwhelming response from guests is that our breakfasts are excellent.
We aim to provide good clean accommodation and a hearty breakfast and our
regular guests confirm that we offer very good value for money.
