About the hotel

Carlton Riverside is a Restaurant-with-Rooms, and is one of the best restaurants in Britain, highly rated by all the independent Guides and most recently voted one of the Top 100 UK Restaurants by Restaurant Magazine. It occupies one of the oldest buildings in Llanwrtyd Wells, the smallest town in Britain, and sits on the south bank of the River Irfon, a lovely crystal-clear stream flowing through the middle of the town. Parking is not a problem here, as there is a free public car park just opposite the restaurant.

Llanwrtyd Wells nestles at the foot of the Cambrian Mountains, a stunningly beautiful range of mountains and valleys, and one of Wales’s best kept secrets. There are wonderful walks to be had without any necessity to drive – you can just set off straight from the front door. Mountain biking is a growing sport and this is a very popular area to indulge in this activity, and bikes can readily be hired locally. Bird watching is also a very popular pastime and the once endangered red kite now flourishes in this area. Golf is available at the Builth Wells golf club just 15 minutes away. Horse riding can also be arranged, as this was the original home of Welsh pony trekking! Just give us a call and we will organise everything for you, whether horses, bikes or whatever.

Out dated, disorganised, bizare, complete lack of care and effort

Not impressed at all after reading such good reviews.

Seems to be living of past glories. Dining room was very strange, we were sat cramped in the corner right next to another table, when the rest of the room was free, we were the only 2 tables, yet we reserved for 7pm but they couldn't cook for us untill 7.45 Cobwebs in the corners and the curtain rail was held together with selotape and not even done well. Definitely not a mitchelin star chef cooking for us, and service was not great, we were given out food, but nobody came to check if everything was ok, as it was not out pepper grinder didn't work and I would have liked some condiments but the waitress only returned long after we finished our meal. Menu was hand written with less than half of the options that were offered on the online menu we had previously read, and also the prices were all higher than stated on the menu outside and on the website. Came down from our room around 9.30pm to get refreshments, stood at reception for 15 minutes ringing the bell, no one around at all, went back to the room, came down again half an hour later, still no sign of anyone, so we checked the dining room, the tables had not even been cleared from our dinner earlier in the evening, was very bizarre. Had nothing to drink in the room, was very unimpressed, and to top it off our kettle did not work so we couldnt even make a cup of tea, then the noise started, a pump in the bathroom was so loud and went off several times, sounded like a washing machine, woke us up twice. We complained when paying our bill, but they did not seem to care. Very disappointing!

Ideal for chilled Bank holiday break

Ideal for a quiet break, lovely town in stunning countryside.

Quirky and a bit different, but none the worse for that. Would definitely stay...
