Designed by the renowned architect William Playfair as a family town house for a wealthy merchant, this is an traditional Georgian building, built in 1820, with many of fine original features still in place. Friendly small hotel in a quiet location near the heart of Edinburgh.
A friendly welcome in a hotel that blends contemporary style with period features.
Room 16 was a large en-suite room on the top floor at the back overlooking the garden and park beyond. The furnishings and fabrics had seen better days, but then so have I. The room was warm and the bed comfy. The shower was weaker than I like and drained slowly. I wondered why a 6 bed room had no lock on the bathroom door. Breakfast was standard quality, served by attentive young staff who found me some honey in a Happy Shopper squeezy bottle, which made me smile. Thanks!
Quality small hotel in a beautiful Georgian building
We've just returned from three very enjoyable days in Edinburgh staying at the Abbey Hotel.
The hotel is easily within walking distance of everything although you have to get used to he fact that Edinburgh is a hilly city. The building is built on five floors with no lift but the views from the upper floors, either looking over to the river in the distance or up Carlton Hill, are quite spectacular. Our room wasn't large and the en suite was compact but all very clean and comfortable with everything we needed. The breakfasts were simply prepared but adequate . Overall, just what we wanted
