A good clean hotel

Friendly reception when we checked in.

Plenty of free parking outside the hotel. Room was a good size, double bed and two singles, very clean with all the usual tea/coffee making facilities and free WiFi. Good size bathroom with shower and bath. Our room didn’t have much of a view as it overlooked the rear of the buildings. Outside the hotel are the steps in the canal (Neptunes Staircase) with a number of locks. Quite a sight as you follow the boats up or down the locks. Cannot comment on the bistro/restaurant as we didn’t use it during our stay. Breakfast was a selection of buffet with cooked breakfast options. Breakfast was a bit of a disappointment compared to other hotels we had had breakfast in. I felt as if it was more of a budget priced offering. However, the cooked breakfast was good, but as a Scottish breakfast I was expecting haggis. The stay was spoilt by issues with the shower. On the first evening my wife started with a hot shower and ended with a cold. After speaking to the duty manager, and some tweaking to the boiler controls, I was able to have a shower about 30 minutes later. In the morning, unfortunately there was no hot water again. Reported and to be fixed during the day. That same evening, again my wife started with a hot shower and ended with a cold one. Reported to duty manager again, and 30 minutes or so later able to resume showers and hot water to room. An inconvenience at first, but annoying after the second time. However, the hotel management acted promptly to resolve the issue on each occasion. The issues we had were probably just unfortunate on that occasion, so I fully recommend the hotel if visiting in the area

One thing to note is that there are no lifts, only a stairway.

The Moorings Hotel

Bedroom a bit smaller than expected, but otherwise comfortable with better quality TV than usual.

Some noise transmission from rooms above and door banging in corridor, just outside our room. No worse than many hotels. Food variable generally very good, but some disappointing breakfast bacon poorly cooked and can't do soft yolk fried egg, but excellent breakfast croissants and scones. Stay again or recommend I have indicated yes, but really this is maybe.
