About the hotel

The George Inn has 8 ensuite rooms all recently refurbished to a high standard and available on a bed and breakfast basis all year round. Conveniently located just off the A303 for easy access to such local attractions as Longleat House and Safari Park and Stourhead House and Gardens. Mere is well situated in Wiltshire, it lies at the extreme southwestern tip of Salisbury Plain close to the borders of Somerset and Dorset.

The Main Bar is spacious and features a large real log fire for those cold winter nights. Adjoining the Main Bar is one of our Dining areas perfect for sampling one of our delicious meals from our extensive menus. There is also our King Charles Room which is also suitable for small private functions and meetings for up to 20 people. Well behaved children are welcome provided that they are eating with grown-ups; food is served daily from 12 noon - 2. 30pm and from 6. 00pm to 9. 00pm in the evening. We have a large car-park from which you can access the Reception, bar and restaurant. For the summer months, there is an outside seating area for enjoying those lovely summer days and warm evenings where you can relax and soak up village life in Mere whilst enjoying a few drinks or a meal. We would like to point out that we are not open 24 hours each day, our reception (and check-in) is available from 8am to 11pm as we have no night poter service and all of our accommodation is on our upper floor which does involve climbing one flight of stairs as we don't have a lift due to the Historic Buildings' Grade 2 listing.

The George

A friendly pub and B and B in the heart of the village,.

Despite its central location, the double glazing on the Windows made it very quiet. The room and bathroom were both clean, and the bed very comfortable. The freshly cooked breakfast was very good and the service friendly and efficient.

The George Inn

Wonderful old world Inn.

The George is very old. Just walking to your room over titled floors and through small doorways takes you into a time gone by. When you enter your room you are back in the 21st century with modern fittings, too and a very comfortable bed. The food in the restaurant was of good quality and the ambiance as you would expect in this old building. Breakfast was good but very generous. If you don't have a large appetite just ask for one sausage. All in all a very good experience. My only fault is that a large free standing roll top bath may look good but it is very difficult to get in and out of. A simple walk in shower would be much safer to use.
