Not quite good enough
While the staff made me feel very welcome I felt the hotel was over sold on the website.
My bed was really uncomfortable and uneven. My room was shabby and run down. The door was falling off the shower. This is not a four star hotel ..... probably a two and a half star. I wish I had paid attention to the other reviews.
Entering the lobby of Tophams Hotel it appeared to be a comfortable town house hotel.
The receptionist , who I think was also the manager ,was friendly and welcoming. However our bedroom was to put it mildly a disgrace. It was on the third floor along a narrow corridor. The room was so small that one of us had to sit on the bed to allow the other to even move around it. We think it might have measured 8ft by 8ft. , the bed comprised of two single bases on a double mattress, which was so worn that the ancient coil springs were digging into our backs when we tried to sleep!. A single bed headboard was fitted to the wall. and a lamp on sitting on top of a mini fridge which in turn was perched precariously on top of another locker (twice my husband had to grab it to prevent it from crashing to the floor as he made his way to switch on the light. !!)that seemed to have a mind of its own and came on at will in the middle of the night.
One of the single bases on which the double mattress sat was at an angle to the other and the built -in cupboard which passed for a wardrobe had an ironing board stored in it so we had nowhere to store our luggage. how anyone could ever iron in this room beggars belief. This brings me to the "shared facilities" which I hadn't noticed on my reservation . I actually did not think that this existed in a hotel in 2016 but disappeared with Tenements of the 60s . There was one shower/ toilet/washbasin in a tiny room down a short flight of stairs. One needed to be very quick to secure a place or sit on the stairs until it became vacant, It was so small that after so many people using it , the floor was really wet. the shower was cold and it sprayed onto the floor soaking the toilet and the toilet paper. The staff in the breakfast room, were uncommunicative and had to be asked for service (such as plates or bowls). Slices of cooked ham, cucumber and tomatoes do not constitute a continental breakfast!. Faulty Towers would be a vast improvement on this place
I am exhausted thinking about our experience, it was horrible so we checked out at the earliest possible opportunity !!
