A bit of both
The hotel is impressive to look at and our room was enormous, with a clean bathroom and useful extra pillows, hairdryer etc.
The reception and bar staff were helpful and polite and the location is ideal for exploring the town, with numerous restaurants and attractions within easy walking distance. On the other hand, it was impossible to get any wifi reception other than in the lobby and even then it was very patchy. Also, although my partner thoroughly enjoyed the full English breakfast, I as a non-meat eater was less happy when the pastries ran out long before end of service. This could have been because the hotel was very full though (being Valentine's Day and with a large concert at the Opera House that night).
half term break
A Great stay, thank you.
we were a little worried reading some of the reviews which seemed a bit hit and miss. Don`t worry though we found it great, the staff friendly and hard working and the room ideal for the 3 of us. yes there are a few parts still in need of decoration, but that is being done and you cannot beat the character of the place, so much nicer than a modern box. We only ate in the hotel once during our stay as we were usually out during the day but Sunday lunch carvery was very nice and a complete bargain. The swimming pool is also a nice touch which we made use of 4 times over our stay.
Where do I start
Lady on reception asked for a £10.00 charge for our dog, which really annoyed me, as this wasn't advertised anywhere on the booking form or the Late Rooms page.
I refused to pay and asked to speak to someone who may be able to help but was told, the manager wouldn't be on duty until the morning. After standing my ground, she called the 'Duty Manager', who I must say was excellent and waived the charge, apologising profusely. We then had problems in the room - the toilet wouldn't flush and we had no hot water - the room was only £40.00, so may be I shouldn't complain!
Good with a little sting
Everything was great in this large grand old building except for the parking charge for hotel patrons !
I booked a double room and was given a Twin, even though it stated a Double on the receipt that was handed to me.
The hotel was fully booked apparently so we couldn't change rooms. However, the cost of the room was such good value, the room was clean, needs a bit of a refurb but it had everything you needed.
The approach to the hotel is very grand and the view from the room was impressive. All in all a good stay and I'd definitely return.
A 2* hotel nested in a 4* palace
- one towel ready for a room booked for two
- one small bottle of water in the room
- no answer when calling room service
- slipper & robes " on demand "
- slipper & robes not available when asked
- no wifi in the room
