First Impressions count!!!
Booked this b&b since the reviews read well and rated well for cleanliness etc.
Having arrived my partner and I tried to gain access to the b&b, there was a man cleaning in reception and since door was locked I looked at the gentleman for assistance. It was upon being let in that the man then instantly turned his back on me and started muttering under his breath, saying I should have rung the bell blah blah blah .He was clearly unhappy and continued to direct this towards myself. It was at this point that I replied "is this the gracious welcome everyone receives?", albeit sarcastically as he was being so rude. It then became apparent that he was the owner of the b&b and then he tried to change his attitude. I and my partner were put off my the initial "welcome" and it was an uncomfortable situation. We checked in and were taken to our room, which was sufficient and looked clean and tidy. We left our bags and went about our business in Harrogate. During this time we decided we did not want to stay the night as we felt uncomfortable with the atmosphere there and so I checked out a few hours later (paying what was due). There was no mention of an apology at any point from the owner or as to why we were checking out early, even though he clearly recognised he had been in the wrong from offset. I'm sure the establishment is fine for a overnight stay but first impressions do count and in this instance it was not good!
Response from hotel
Yes, my attitude was perhaps wrong. But rather than tap lightly on the door to attract my attention, or ring the doorbell, the guest tried to loudly force the door open. I had thought I had offered an apology for my off hand reception. My manner was also not enhanced by the fact it was just past midday, check in is from 2.00 pm, and the guests with their luggage in hand, made no mention of being early, or was the room ready, they came in expecting to go straight to the room, which fortunately was ready.
