The Downs Hotel
Great for away fans going to Brighton
This place was so bad we checked out half an hour after arriving.
We only stayed that long because we were deciding where else to go. This is not a hotel, its a grotty and dingy pub with a few dated rooms upstairs. The room we were shown was right next to the crossroads of a main road with old windows that had no double glazing and were drafty and damp. The toilet down the hall which was shared with another room was so small you had to sit on the toilet before you could close the door and the shower next door was very mouldy and unappealing. The pub downstairs was smelly and grotty and I would not have eaten there if you had paid me. I cannot understand at all how this place gets any good reviews. This was the only reason we booked it, because from the information on laterooms.com and then reviews there we thought it looked like a nice clean country pub tucked away from the noise of Brighton. It is not what it looks like from the pictures. It certainly taught me to do a bit more homework before booking somewhere and definitely not to trust the reviews from just one website. Really hoping this review stops others from making the same mistake!!!
The Downs Hotel
The room was small but perfectly adequate.
Everything worked, it was warm and the bed was comfortable. The landlord was welcoming and obliging. I got back late and left early so having my own front door worked well for me.
Poor house keeping , slow check in.
After a long drive through November rain the 10 minutes check in time was painful.
The 4 poster room looked nice on the surface BUT the toilet plumbing was scarily loud, the fluff at the edge of the bed was thick, the radiator did not work even though the manager said he would sort it out, the TV remote needed new batteries, the milks were not replenished, nor the room serviced between the 2 days we stayed there. Breakfast service however was excellent, efficient and friendly.
The Downs Hotel
Needed a place that was convenient for a hospital stay with an early morning admission.
The Downs hotel was with walking distance as neither I or my guest drove. Staff were very helpful and friendly, rooms were as expected and clean with a daily refresh of towels beds, remade and tea and coffee refreshed. Food available as a carvery on Sunday and restaurant meals during the week were excellent and thoroughly enjoyed breakfast included in the price was great too. Even though the hotel is on a main road, noise wasn't a problem even with the windows open and the view across the downs to the sea were stunning.
Great short stay
Only stayed one night but great for easy travel to Brighton and Universities
The Downs Hotel
Lovely place for a short break.
On arrival to the hotel I was greeted by staff who were friendly and helpful during check-in. I was shown to my room which was clean and plenty big enough for my one night stay. I did have some issues with the tv but this was not a big issue. While I did not eat at the hotel there was a decent variety on the menu with multiple vegetarian options. Overall, I would give the hotel 8/10, I would stay here again if it was for single night, however the room was a little too small to be comfortable for a longer period of time.
Strangely amusing and quite a nice place
Overall I am generally impressed with the place.
Some of the regulars in the bar present with an IQ and surprisingly similar shoe size and don't know when to curtail their language when ladies are in the bar Worse still, one is an Arsenal supporter. Bedroom, very small shower and sink but adequate as I was not planning on a party in the shower. TV was great but the bed was very soft for someone with a bad back so unfair to be rude about it. food - went for the simple option, ham, egg & chips as it would be a small meal, just what I needed after a long drive and a pint of their best bitter. Wrong !. Huge chunks of ham . Really good meal but embarrassingly for me, I could not finish it all. well cooked and well priced
Breakfast - good, not great but a hearty fat boys selection
As I said before, overall a good place to stay and somewhere that if I were in the area again, I would stay at
Great value for money
Fabulous place to stay.
Convenient for Brighton seafront and town centre, coastline and downs. Free parking was a real bonus and a full English breakfast included in the price. Staff were very helpful and friendly. The rooms were clean and tidy with a T.V and wash facilities. Forget the overpriced city centre hotels the Downs is the place to stay.
great people great service
