Disappointing experience, with little sleep

Where to start.

The Empress is a well known hotel on the island and when I needed a hotel it was my first choice. However what I got was a hotel so noisy I got hardly any sleep. The whole hotel was a disappointment. I expect it was very nice in the early 90s, but they don't seem to have done anything to it since. Things didn't start well as I opened the front door to be greeted with smell of stale alcohol, which I assume came from the stained doormat in front of me. There's then the stairs up and more pointless stairs inside. If you have a lot of heavy bags this will be awkward. I booked a single room, which happily came with a double bed, but it barely fit into the room. The noise from all sides was very annoying, the room doors all have very powerful door closers on, so any time someone nearby opens their door there is a loud bang. Conversation in adjoining rooms was loud and intelligible, the floor in the room above creaked loudly and the shower directly above was also very loud. The lift door also banged when closing. There seems to be no soundproofing whatsoever in the hotel. Noise didn't stop until nearly 2am and resumed about 6am. The rest of the room was as follows:

Bed was hard. Tiny TV mounted on the wall. Tiny desk at the foot to the bed, which blocks access to the windows so you have to clamber over the bed. Curtains were decent thick blackout type, how unfortunate then that they didn't meet, making them useless. The net curtains had what I assume were cigarette burns all over them. Room smelled of stale smoke and was very stuffy. The floor was noticeably wonky so it gave the feeling of being on a listing ship the whole time. Bathroom was bizarrely large (almost as big as the room). Shower was fixed to the wall at a low height and very close to the wall, meaning to be under it I had to lean against the wall over the bath taps, a really basic failure of design. Towels were thin and scratchy like a cheap hostel. Bin was all rusty. Light switches were badly worn and dirty. I booked in for two nights, but given the complete failure of the primary function of a hotel (a place to sleep) I decided to check out after the first night. The staff were very polite and gave no argument when I cancelled the second night. They did ask why I was leaving early and I explained about the noise, their response was to apologise, shrug shoulders and state "hotels are noisy".
