A Christmas treat that turned out to be over priced and disappointingly average

This was a Christmas treat for my husband and I.

We only get one night away by our selves due to 3 children, so admittedly we had high hopes and high expectations. We prebooked our room at a cost of £180 including breakfast but when I checked on the day there were rooms available for just £120, which was very upsetting. Our room was clean but very dated indeed, with that old people's home smell??. There was no view, bathroom was dark and uninviting and just had an overall dark, worn and depressing feel. Harrogate is lovely and this is a huge hotel with impressive high ceilings and original features but we couldn't help feeling disappointed. We have paid less at other hotels and had much more uplifting accommodation. The breakfast was however lovely, with a true banquet of choice and was delicious. I don't normally leave reviews, but the fact we had to pay £60 more than on the day bookings for what was a very average room upset us very much.

Very disappointing room

The website shows refurbished rooms - ours was clearly not one of these.

The bed was comfortable and the linen looked new but the room was dark, drab and very dated. The window frames had ingrained dirt/mould, there was badly cracked paint on the window sill & the radiator and there were no plugs anywhere near where the furniture so we had to put the kettle on the floor to boil it. The bathroom had frosted glass but no curtain or blind so we were clearly visible to anyone outside when the light was on as the sink and toilet were very close to the window. There was black mould behind the taps on the bath and the shower, although good and powerful went from running at a comfortable temperature to near scalding in an instant whilst I was under it. The hotel is massive and will no doubt cost many millions to completely refurbish but until that happens be prepared to step back into the 1970's at best or make sure you specify a refurbished room when booking.
