About the hotel
Situated in the picturesque beauty of the Churnet Valley, The Railway has been part of the area for almost as long as the railway that runs in front of it has been in existence. The area was christened ‘ Staffordshire’s Little Switzerland’ by the railway company in the late 1800’s in an attempt to attract tourists.
This led to the Earl of Shrewsbury opening the garden’s at Alton Towers to visitors that nowadays hosts a world famous theme park and Resort.
It was around that time that the Railway Hotel as it was then seems to have been built with it first being recorded in the census of 1881 which would have coincided with the increase in tourism.
Nowadays the railway is a tourist attraction in itself attracting many thousands of people to its steam train themed days. We have a good relationship with the Churnet Valley Railway and together we provide a great day out in the Staffordshire Moorlands.
The Railway Inn as it is now continues to provide fine ales, food and accommodation for the local community and those who continue to visit ‘Staffordshire’s Little Switzerland’
Situated just 4 miles and less than ten minutes from the market town of Cheadle or 9 miles and twenty minutes from Leek, The Railway is an ideal base to explore the Churnet Valley, the nearby Peak District and also to visit the Alton Towers Resort.
