One night break

Firstly the hotel is not in Whitstable.
It's in Tankerton. Ok - this is the next door place, but this is not obvious from the website, and the walk between the two is through some of the 'sadder' areas of Whitstable which somewhat skewed our overall experience of the area. Second - we had booked a 'superior sea view room' and had a confirmation email to show this. On arrival we were given a different room. When we queried it, we were told we had apparently not in fact booked a 'superior' room, that this was because of the website - or it was because we had misunderstood - in fact it was everyone's fault apart from the hotel's - despite the fact they admitted having had previous 'problems' with the website we had booked through, but were nevertheless happy to continue to take bookings through them. 'Sorry' seemed a word too far for the general manager who refused to even accept that we had in fact booked the superior room despite the email stating this. No kind of compensation was forthcoming despite a verbal commitment to a reduction on the room rate. Breakfast menu looked great on paper but was sadly lacking in delivery - the kind of scrambled eggs you slice through with a knife & pancakes saturated in some kind of syrup that had never come close to the promised maple, with a few bits of browning sliced banana on top. We had come her for a one night break after my husband recovered from an operation (hence why the bath & balcony of the 'superior' room was desirable) - sadly our stay was anything but special. Fortunately it was redeemed by a fantastic meal at the Royal Native Oyster Stores, which was actually in Whitstable and which we would thoroughly recommend!
