Not geared for customers
The location of this hotel was ideal for my trip to London, being equidistant from Euston, Kings Cross/St Pancras and Russell Square.
I was concerned as travelling alone as to whether I should have gone to a chain hotel such as Holiday Inn or Premier Inn, I wish I had. It got off to a good start as I wanted to leave my bags there before checking in - the girl on duty could not have been nicer or more helpful.
On my return at 4 p.m. to check in though, a different receptionist. I checked in, only to be told I was on the third floor and there was no lift. I had a wheeled case and several carriers plus a handbag. No one available to assist, The stairs are quite steep and have striped carpet which makes for dizziness when climbing up the 60 or so stairs - more so coming down. I should have realised the compact size of my room as the door opened outwards into the small corridor. It was very small, but seemed clean and functional. The TV worked and there were teabags, coffee and a kettle etc. The socket however was a single socket extension lead which emanated under the dressing table/desk. Most bizarre. There was a slight smell in the ensuite which was a sort of wet room set up. I went out for the evening - you have to take your keys (2 door keys plus a credit card size key fob which has to be used to get power in the room, why not make that also the room key as in other hotels?) as reception is closed after 10.30 p.m. and you have to use the night door. When I returned (using the night door), climbed the steep stairs to my room, the smell was more powerful, but as no one was available, reception being closed, I shut the bathroom door tight and tried to open the window. It would open but would not stay open. The next morning, I went to shower, the smell seemed to come from the drain in the shower floor. The soap dish in the shower was disgusting, bottle tops from previous user's shampoo (?) and a filthy wedge of soap stuck to the dish.
In my room, I also found the previous occupant's bill . So the cleaners had missed that as well. Annoyingly he paid 15% less than me, and I thought I had a good deal using LateRooms. When I checked out, I told the receptionist (yet another one) who just went "oh". She really did not seem to know what to do when told something was wrong. Absolutely no apology, no request for further details, no "I'll get someone to look at that" - nothing.
You have to pay when you check in so you have no leverage.
Basically a basic hotel, low standards of cleanliness and customer service, only interested in taking your money, only good thing is the location,
