North Lakes Hotel and Spa - Shire Hotels
Don't let the blue exterior fool you, the hotel is beautiful inside and amazing facilities.
We ate in the hotel and the food was excellent. A thoroughly enjoyable stay would definitely recommend staying here.
Overall excellent-cant wait to go back
Booked through laterooms and got a good deal for my family of 5.
We stayed in a family room with double bed, settee bed and a bunk, good sized room and the cookies on arrival for kids a nice touch. Breakfast very nice, staff helpful. Used the pool and steam room both great kids had a fab time, water nice and warm-hard to fault just wish we'd booked for 2 nights!!
Lovely experience would come back again
We stayed for 2 nights and booked a family room.
When we arrived in our room their was cookies with each of our kids names on them and mugs with hot chocolate and raisins for each of the kids. The night before easter they put Easter eggs on all kids beds. The swimming pool was great and the breakfast was amazing. The staff are so friendly and accommodating. I would definitely recommend this hotel. On a negative the family room was very small compared to other hotels I've stayed in but all the other experience made up for it
Lovely hotel, fantastic facilities and wonderful food.
customer service was excellent, warm welcomong staff. The hotel has just the right balance of formality and comfort.
A bit cramped for a family of five but some good aspects
Some lovely little touches- cookies left in the room when we arrived iced with the names of the kids plus an Easter egg each on Easter Sunday.
Complementary toiletaries were good quality. Room was clean. Food in the bar and restaurant was very good- the Cumbrian Buffet was lovely, although kids menu was a bit limited. The kids enjoyed the pool and the fluffy robes and pool towels came in useful. Staff were friendly and helpful. The location of the hotel was ideal. The room was fine but with five of us, this meant a double bed, bunk beds and sofa bed; leaving very little floor space. Our youngest daughter found the sofa bed too uncomfortable to sleep on and so we improvised a cot for our two year old son on the sofa which worked well. We would have struggled if he was older, though.
We didn't complain at the time but the promised daily fresh milk only arrived on one day. The temperature of the room was set too high and being unable to alter this (the radiator was off), we slept with the window open (in March!)
We only had breakfast on the last day as it seemed very pricey on top of the cost of the room, especially for a big family. The cooked breakfast was on dubious quality for the £14 charge so we were very glad to have NOT paid an additional £40 per day for this. I was expecting something which was on a par with the evening meals- far from it, I am afraid.
Poor Quality Hotel
On Check in we were given very little guidance as to what the hotel had to offer.
We had to ask all the questions and request if dinner reservations were available. The person was very pleasant but not very informative. We were given room 228 and this room can only be described as grubby at best. The throw on the bottom of the bed was soiled and the carpet was stained with a lot of mess. I asked to be moved to a room which was more worthy of the £100 room rate, this was duly done with no fuss, the new room was cleaner but still very basic.
We went to use the pool facilities but found this to be a very worrying experience. A number of families were in the pool, but a number of very small children were playing in the spa bath ducking there heads underneath in what could have been disasterous circumstances. Larger signage is needed to outline the dangers to small children here. I got the impression that these were local visitors rather than hotel guests. The food and service in the restaurant was of very basic fare with the waiting staff taking orders without writing down what was asked for. This resulted in incorrect food being delivered and hot food going cold. Four wines off the list were not in stock and the waiters insisted on topping up our wine glasses far too often . All in all a very poor show.
Great Facilities - disappointing Service
Our stay was one of two halves - a Mothers Day treat with 8 in the party - family of 5 (2 adults, 3 children), a couple and Mum.
From the outset this baffled the hotel as on arrival and despite having the booking confirmation from Late Rooms to hand the accommodation was wrong - only catering for 6 (5 adults and 1 child). Having also booked breakfast and requested that it was placed on one room this proved too difficult. In fact it took three attempts to sort out the room bookings and the payment for dinner and breakfast. The spa facilities and evening meal could not be faulted - great facilities to relax following a walk in the Lakes - it was surprising that the jacuzzi was closed for a period in the morning once the spa was open. The most disappointing element was the housekeeping - I found a pair of underpants in a draw. Yes, on telling reception they were removed and we had some drinks credited to our account but it then bro ngs into question the rigour of the cleaning of the room. Additionally, in the room we were allocated it was impossible to watch television due to the poor reception - another issue that should have been sorted before we arrived. What could have been a great stay was tarnished by the confusion in bookings, poor housekeeping and lack of maintenance of the room.
Nice room, shame about the neighbours
We stayed in a superior double room which was very nicely decorated.
The bed was comfortable and the shower was good. A small but important feature was having fresh milk for any drinks we made in the room. We were staying for a family party and didn't eat in the restaurant but food was provided at our function and it was fresh and plentiful. We didn't use the spa although we were entitled to. It being Saturday, the pool and Jacuzzi were full with too many children for our liking. We aren't spa users so it was no great loss to us. The only real negative was the noise throughout the night and early morning of doors near us being banged shut. I think there was a cleaners cupboard opposite and they must have been in and out of it from about 5 in the morning. I was a little surprised that £130 doesn't get you breakfast but it wasn't a problem as we were up and checked out early enough to eat somewhere else. I would stay again as the service was great and the overall ambience was relaxing but I would recommend ear plugs and don't plan on being able to get into the spa if it's a weekend.
A lovely break away
We stayed here for a weekend, hotel was lovely and chilled out.
10minute walk to city centre. Food was nice but not worth the price tag, far too expensive!. There was a confusion at breakfast time when we was told we hadn't paid for breakfast when we had, the issue was resloved. Staff on reception very friendly was well looked after.
