Clean room and shower for the night!
I was not looking for an 'experience', just a quiet, clean, comfortable room with a decent shower for the night.
I was arriving very late (c.2am ) and needed to know that I would have a friendly welcome and the room was held for me. The staff were friendly, and despite having to work around decorators, were polite and cheery. The tea/coffee making facilities were clean, and easy to use - just what I needed when I got in. The room was a single and relatively small, but warm, clean and just what I needed, and the wake up call was done on time.
Fantastic Nights Sleep
Amazingly comfy bed, lovely attentative staff just disappointed that the restaurant was closed without notifying us due to two weddings being on.
Had we had known this we would have gone for something to eat on the way as we had had a long day of travelling.
The Hillcrest Hotel - a Corus hotel
Beautiful room, beautiful furnishings and a great side but unfortunately the bathroom was unclean, hairs found and black scum present around the bath tub.
Also found the temperature of the room unbearabley hot and was unable to sleep. With out these factors stay would have been great.

Overnight stay only.
Room a little tired but very clean and everything looked ok. Arrived late in the evening but staff still on and very polite. Booked a single room in advance for £41 (room only)
Only slight gripe was that the showerhead was lose so you struggled to use it.

My stay at the hillcrest
We were quite surprised at the size of the room and how quiet it was even though it seemed quite full at the hotel.

"Decent Hotel ruined by appalling food and service"
I stayed here on business in April and on first impressions this was a decent enough hotel.
A friendly and efficient welcome by Tony on Reception and my room was more than acceptable, if just a little outdated with a tiny flat screen television on the wall which looked lost. The place could be doing with a freshening up but it was clean and tidy with no great concerns. My room was at the rear of the Hotel which overlooked a football pitch and with a game being played on arrival this did provide some entertainment for me for a while and from a prime viewing position. So far, all good. Then I came down for dinner. After a couple of minutes wait the young waitress emerged from the kitchen and sat me down at a table and took my order. There was only one other table of two guys in the whole restaurant. I opted for the chicken goujons with barbecue sauce starter which was just short of £6 and the Seabass for the main course. The starters description on the menu gives the impression that this is fresh chicken fillets in a deep fried crumb coating and I was looking forward to it. Imagine my disappointment when what actually arrived was frozen processed chicken nuggets, the same as you would get from McDonalds or Burger King and I counted 6 tiny nuggets which equates to £1 each. This irked me considerably as I could've got exactly the same at one of these Fast Food emporiums for £1.99. I did mention my dissatisfaction to the waitress at the time that the menu is misleading and I felt conned. Surprisingly the response was that it is normally made fresh but not tonight. I then was party to a prolonged conversation in the kitchen between the Chef and the Waitress where he was giving the girl a hard time for agreeing to provide a chap at the other table with a dollop of ice cream alongside his dessert and demanding this chap be charged for it over and above the price of the Chocolate Fudge cake. The two chaps on the other table also overheard this conversation. The waitress then disappeared for a while and I spied her folding napkins at the front entrance for almost half an hour. I knew my main course was sitting ready on top of the hotplate for some considerable time and it was almost 45 minutes from my starter being cleared to my main course being served and surprise surprise, it was cold when it arrived. I then complained to the waitress that it had been sitting for ages as she folded napkins but I ate it anyway. A miserable small fillet of seabass on a cold milky goo and luke warm frozen chips. As I dined the Chef then appeared in a hostile manner and stated he had put my main course on as soon as I had finished my starter. I replied that "he may well have done but it had clearly been sitting waiting to be served until it had gone cold" and at this point he just skulked back into the kitchen grumbling. The manager Tony then appeared and in fairness to him he was very apologetic and customer focussed and did offer a complementary breakfast the next morning which I gratefully accepted. He was very good and professional and a credit to the Hotel. Next morning I appeared down for breakfast and stood at the entrance for 5 minutes waiting to be seated. Nobody was in the restaurant at this point. I could hear the breakfast waitress in deep conversation with the lady in the kitchen and after my wait I decided to find a seat and sit down myself with a glass of orange juice waiting to give my order to waitress who was still chatting in the Kitchen. Another solo diner arrived shortly after me and went through the same motions. Unbelievably I waited a full 20 minutes until I ran out of time and the waitress had yet to emerge from the Kitchen. At this point I just put on my jacket and only met the waitress as I was leaving. A cheery "good morning" from her and "what can I get you". as if she had only been in the kitchen a moment was met with a "nothing thanks, I've been waiting nearly half an hour to give you an order and I've now ran out of time". It is such a shame that my impressions of this hotel have been soured by such shoddy service and food standards as it is actually not a bad Hotel. Tony was exemplary in the way he handled my complaint but the Receptionist on `check out' confirmed the breakfast staff were aware of my issue of the previous evening and that I was coming in for breakfast and yet I still experienced the sheer malaise which seems to permeate throughout the Catering staff. I get frustrated when so called Chefs simply take things out of packets of frozen food and heat up and unfortunately this seemed to be the case with The Hillcrest Hotel. Not impressed and not one I would rush back to without some major changes to personnel and staff training
The room looked far better than it actually was.
Very old fashioned decor dark furniture, four poster bed ornate lamps. The bed looked inviting but was like sleeping on a floor. Likewise the pillows were solid, rigid and uncomfortable. The corridors had just been painted and the smell was very overpowering. Therefore difficult to settle and sleep. The pluses of the room (large tv, large corner Bath, lovely and warm, quite, nice thick blackout curtains etc) were far outweighed by the discomfort caused by the smell of paint. Car park could also do with resurfacing and update.
A nice overnight stay
Rooms wil need a makeover soon but don't let that put you off.
They are clean and bright with all mod cons. Very cheerfull staff, evening meal and breakfast were good, nice bar to sit in and have a drink / meal.
