A little bit of history....

Cragwood was originally designed by Frank Dunkerley and built in 1910 for the industrialist Albert Warburton. The house is built from stone quarried in its own grounds and these quarries, which are now a feature of the water gardens, also provided the stone for the famous round house on Belle Isle and many of the houses on the opposite shore of the lake. Many of the Cragwood's original features have been retained and lovingly restored including beautiful wood panelling and magnificent fireplaces.

The Edwardian Gardens, landscaped at the turn of the century by Thomas Mawson, lead down to the shore of Lake Windermere where we have half a mile of lake frontage. Scattered across the shore, both above and below the water-line, are the curious "Inscribed Rocks of Windermere" and on which the recluse John Longmire carved the names of his heroes and enthusiasms in stone.

Great hotel, good value
We moved to the hotel after being disappointed with a slightly cheaper alternative down the road; it was a great decision. The hotel and its grounds are beautiful. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The location was excellent and provided great access to the surrounding area. All in all, it was well worth the few extra pounds to stay at the Cragwood Country Hotel.

Best hotel location I've ever stayed in! Incredible Views!
This hotel was amazing, I couldn't believe my luck when I pulled into the driveway. I was greeted by an attentive staff member who showed me to my room which was at the back of the hotel in the middle section. The room itself wasn't the best. It was extremely small even for a single room, and it backed onto a small courtyard where there was some sort of refrigeration unit or fan which made a lot of noise which was especially annoying during the night. The bathroom was dated and the sink was situated inside the bedroom area. However I am led to believe that the majority of the other rooms are of better quality and I would stay here again but not in the same room that's for sure. What blew me away most was the grounds of the hotel which lie on the banks of Lake Windermere itself so you get an amazing view where ever you looked. The hotel has well kept gardens for guests to walk around and enjoy the views. As for food, it was also of a high standard. You can either have a set menu for dinner which you have to book for in advance or order of a "snacks" menu as I did but what I ordered was pretty darn tasty and the waiting staff were really helpful and attentive as well. Breakfast however was a bit disjointed for my experience to begin with. The hotel has two dining rooms and I walked into one and just sat down but apparently I was in the wrong dining room as a table had been set for me in the other one across the hotel. It would have been nice to have been told which dining room to go to the night before or upon my arrival to avoid this confusion. However breakfast itself was delicious and there was a great selection. I had selected items from the "Full English" section and some toast but there was also cereals and other such breakfast goods.
All in all I shall be staying here every time I visit the Lake District and I intend to return as often as I can.

What a find! Booked at 2 days notice, I was instantly offered an upgrade from single to very comfortable double room on my arrival, no extra cost, didn't need to ask. The house is beautiful, the setting spectacular and the staff are excellent, welcoming and helpful. No dining room on the night I stayed, but the bar snacks were more than enough. My regret is that I only booked a one night stay, Will definitely return and would recommend this hotel wholeheartedly.

A real find
This hotel really stands out from the crowd. As soon as you reach the top of the drive and see the wonderful views of Lake Windermere and the surrounding fells, you know you have arrived somewhere special. This was confirmed when I took a walk down to the lake shore and a red deer literally crossed the path in front of me.
The management and staff are all incredibly friendly and helpful in a totally natural and unpretentious way. You feel you can ask anything.
The building itself is lovely, with a strong sense of the past. The wooden staircases and the lounges are beautiful, as are the views from them of the gardens and the lake beyond.
The breakfasts were excellent, with attention to detail. I also sampled an evening bar meal (well-presented and very generous portions) and one of the four course dinners which was more of a dining experience than just a meal, if perhaps a little expensive.
My room was a small double for single occupancy and was quaint with some thoughtful touches eg a dish of sweets, a variety of biscuits, nice range of bathroom cosmetics.
The only very slight downsides to my stay were not having a lake view from my room and the rather unfortunate location of the plug points for the kettle etc, which meant having to bend under the dressing table each time you wanted to use an electrical item. These, in no way, detracted from my stay.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone. The location and the high standard of customer service make it very special.
