We had a good time here. The Royal Oak is a bit rough and ready - not at all pristine: the pub downstairs has certainly seen better days, the shower in our room had to be persuaded to work and the phone gave us trouble (but only because I was trying to ring an 0800 number). Don't go here if you want to be posh! But our room was big enough, there was a plentiful supply of tea and coffee, an enormous bed, decent towel and toiletries, and a good view. Breakfast was as substantial as we wanted it to be - cereals, yoghourts, croissants, toast, and an 8 item main course. Everything was brought to the table. No limits there. For evening meals there is an extensive menu and the food was really good and in large quantities. The best thing about it all, though, was the excellent welcome. From the first minute we were treated as if we were family or close friends and our stay was very satisfying indeed. I'll certainly go back there if I need a room in the Durham area - it's about 6 miles out.

Highly Recommended
Set in an old Colliery village approx 7 miles outside the City of Durham, The Royal Oak is outstanding value for money ... in every category. I can guarantee that I will be staying here whenever I am in the vicinity of Durham.
