Welcome and friendly people
I really enjoyed my stay with Ian and Sonia at the Royal Oak. I had a warm welcome from both and was made to feel at home. My room was clean, spacious and had everything I needed, even the night lamp was touch sensitive. My evening meal was really good value for money and the morning breakfast was the best I have had at any hotel or guest house I have ever stayed at. All in all, I will be definately returning to the Royal Oak if I am working in the area again. Thank you Ian and Sonia.

Very friendly and welcoming pub-hotel. Good value and location
A small and very friendly traditional pub with several rooms upstairs. The welcome couldn't have been warmer, and the staff were obliging and helpful. Very comfortable, warm, clean room, and hearty pub food. It's in a great location for Durham City or for walking on the northern Pennines. And a great place to break the journey from southern England to Scotland. Good value too.

Overnight stay
We found this hotel a small friendly place and after a days business it was nice to relax in a clean comfortable room, enjoying the view of the lovely countryside from our window. Next morning,Sonia our lovely host, provided us with a substantial full English breakfast which set us up for the day.
Excellent value for money .

Never judge a book.....
Although slightly dubious when I first saw the outside of The Royal Oak, I received a warm welcome, clean and comfortable room, tasty homemade food and great value for money. I normally stay in chain hotels but decided to look for better value and hopefully a more interesting stay as well as supporting independent business. I got a great welcome and enjoyed the relaxed and friendly atmosphere in the bar. For the money it is difficult to pick holes but if pushed I would say the mattress could be a little firmer but was delighted to find a decent shower.
