Highly Recommended
Set in an old Colliery village approx 7 miles outside the City of Durham, The Royal Oak is outstanding value for money ... in every category. I can guarantee that I will be staying here whenever I am in the vicinity of Durham.

A gem
On a scale of 1 to 10, this pub is an 11.
Too many reviewers stay at hotels and pubs and go round just looking for things to complain about. It's time for those individuals be be realistic and appreciate the things that really matter - it's people that matter.
The Royal Oak is a real find run by an exceptionally hospitable couple working really hard to provide amazing value and comfortable accommodation.
The welcom was warm, the food was unpretentious and great value, the room was large and clean - but I do think the person responsible for cleaning needs to have a look in the drawers after the guests have left ;-) Breakfast was excellent and relaxed.
Just think of it as visiting your very favourite friend
I hope to get any excuse to visit this part of the world again The people are so friendly and hospitable....... makes me want to relocate up 'tNorth..

An Unusual Experience.
Arrived late pm for an overnight stay. I did have to leave early owing to my business commitments and decided to skip breakfast accordingly.
On arrival I received a warm welcome, which was nice. Surroundings in the pub were dingy & dated but ok I was only here for a night & I've spent time in Nepal, West Africa & places all over the planet which definitely didn't compare with "The Ritz.".
I settled in to my room which was ample with working shower & then downstairs for a pint & rabbit pie. Both were fine & the latter extremely good with tasty peas & chip-shop tasting chips. The locals were enjoying themselves but as an early morning threatened I retired & gave up the idea of sleep owing to next door's dog barking outside until it either died or was allowed in around 11pm. To be fair to the dog it was a freezing night when most animals should be indoors.
A further attempt to get to sleep failed as some aficianado in the bar downstairs, who was attempting to sing & play a guitar in tandem, must have fallen off his bar-stool some time post 2am! I finally managed a couple of hours kip before my alarm kicked in at 6am whereby I gathered up my belongings & made my escape.
To be fair the landlady was very friendly as were the locals. But no I don't think "I'll Be Back".
