Reviews - Winder Hall Country House

4Self Classified Bed and Breakfast Ratings explained
Lorton, , , Cockermouth, CA13 9UP
Our historic country house and restaurant is situated in the vale of Lorton, within a short drive of several of the Lake District’s most stunning lakes, and ideally located close to both the market town of Cockermouth and the adventure capital Keswick. As well as wonderful bed and breakfast, and complimentary tea and cake on arrival, we offer non-resident evening dining, Sunday lunches and afternoon tea. Whether you simply want a break away from the hustle & bustle, are visiting us on business, or booking us exclusively for your special wedding or party, we’ll offer you hospitality with a big heart from our very friendly team. Come & wander in the gardens and relax on the terrace with a drink, or take a dip in the hot tub and sauna to unwind. Our four poster rooms are perfect for a family getaway and can fit up to two extra beds. Some double rooms can also accomodate children but please contact us if you require an extra bed (£15 supplement per bed per night). Packhorse Cottage, our self-catering accomodation at the foot of Winder Hall's drive, is also available to book, and you can see photos in the gallery here as well. This beautiful cottage is perfect for a break away with family or friends. It sleeps five, although we can accommodate an extra person for a small supplement. Pretty garden and off road parking, plus the chance to use all the facilities of Winder Hall. Apololgies, but we don't allow pets.

Charming place with excellent food
Winder Hall is a delightful old house in a beautiful and mercifully quiet and unspoiled part of the Lake District. It's like staying in a stately home. It is very minimally staffed but we were warmly welcomed and never short of anything we wanted. It's not like staying in a hotel, more like making yourself at home in this beautiful place for a few days. It is a historic place and therefore not everything is ultra modern. We did have a problem with Roman window blinds, but we have them at home and I know only too well how awkward they can be. Central heating was a bit noisy but worked perfectly well.
Tea and coffee in the room is expected, but nice to have fresh milk available (in fridge outside room) rather than the usual plastic offerings.
We had dinner there on the first night, but it wasn't available on the second, It was a fantastic meal and with an offer of 4 courses for £25 seemed like unbelievably good value.
Breakfast was excellent.
I will definitely go back

Wonderful overnight stay
We stopped in this wonderful 15th century hotel just for our one night stay in the Lakes, but we wished we could have stopped a lot longer!
From the moment we drove through the gateway we were blown away. This building is fantastic!
The staff was so welcoming and attentive, our room was amazing and so romantic with its four poster bed and fantastic views.
Thank you so much, we can't wait to return but for longer next time.

We were lucky enough to have dined here during our stay and the food and service again was impeccable .
The manager was a real nice guy , knowledgeable and passionate about the hotel and it was obvious why .
We could fault nothing during our stay , and will definitely be returning soon as well as recommending it to all our friends .
If we weren't already married with three sons , Winder Hall would definitely be the place we choose to have our wedding .
Don't take our word for it , experience Winder Hall for yourself .We guarantee you will not be disappointed .

Superb place - hidden gem
Winder Hall is a real treat. Lovely location, loads of character, great food, excellent staff. We will definitely return. If you don't want to eat dinner at the hotel every night, there's a very good pub 5 mins' walk away that offers great food and drink.
