The Orchid Hotel
Renovations? More like a building site. Currently unsafe to stay in.
The 'renovations' actually should be described as a building site, we entered the hotel to ladders, drills, nail guns, wet floors with no safety proceedires or signs in place.
The work carried on until past 1.30am. No one should stay in this hotel until it is actually made safe. An employee told me a couple of weeks ago they had pulled the lobby ceiling down and still let customers come and pay to stay. Our room had no phone because it had been "stolen", no apology given just an excuse of "what can we do?". Faulty shower head in a new room, but they did fix it when asked. Had to move our car for a skip and wait 20 minutes in the car park because they werent actually ready anyway. Although, when the work is finished, it really will be a stunning boutique.
Two night weekday break
As we booked this hotel through a third party we were not made aware that there were major renovation work in progress.
I felt that the hotel really should have closed down whilst this work was being carried out as there were wires handing down from the ceiling and mess all over the lobby and staircase. This was a big disappointment to both my wife and I. Once the work is completed I am sure that we would use this hotel again.
Would stay again
The room was a little small but perfectly suitable for our needs (i.e.
to sleep in). The bed was comfy and we got a great night's sleep. Only small thing, when you are travelling with someone else, the door into the en-suite isn't very 'heavy' and if someone gets up in the night the light in the bathroom triggers the fan which can wake you up. Great selection of breakfast, and when I asked for just bacon (pregnancy craving), they were able to provide this without a problem. Staff were friendly and helpful and although the hotel was undergoing some renovations we didn't hear any noise or find that anything was inaccessible. Noise in general, in fact, was pretty low. We might have just been lucky with the other guests who were staying but once in the room, besides the occasional door lock, we couldn't hear any noise in the corridors or in other rooms (some hotels you can hear through the walls, but not here!)
Excellent hotel, would highly recommend
The hotel was easy to reach from Bournemouth Train Station, taking approximately 15 minutes.
We were warmly welcomed by staff and were able to check in early as our room was already cleaned. The room itself was a good size, as was the bathroom. We booked a double room, expecting a double bed however it was two singles pushed together which was annoying but still comfortable. Breakfast was included in the price and was brilliant - continental (which you could help yourself to) and cooked (take full advantage - it's delicious). Will be booking to stay here again in the summer :)
50th wedding anniversary
When we arrived building work was going on so rather noisy and no water for two hours so was unable to make tea or flush the toilet.
The room was clean and comfortable and the breakfast was excellent. overall was very good value for money. The location was not the best for us.
