A great place to stay
An Excellent venue , I have visited the hotel many times .
Nice but worn
The hotel is decorated nicely and is at an acceptable standard.
However due to the hotel being an old building the Windows had condensation on them as they were single glazed, and some of the furniture is tired and worn. The rooms aren't very spacious either, which is okay if you are only there to sleep but it did feel fairly clostropobic with two people in the room.
very basic for just over £100,
Accommodation is not always in the same building. You need to make sure you drive to the reception which has a limited parking area. You have additional parking however, this could result in walking around with all your bags.
Also, poor lighting in the car parks away from the main building.
I stayed in the separate Fir tree annex in late October.
The room was nice enough and everything functioned but there was a very loud noise, a bit like drilling, that occurred whenever other rooms used their water. This disturbed me during the evening, night and morning. It may have just been that my room was near the boiler as other than that everything was fine.
An ideal quiet location for exploring reading and london .close to park and ride which was easy to access and also allowed quick links to railways into London.
Very small room
The room I was allocated was so small and poorly designed that I had to constantly move my bag around the room when I wanted to move around.
The bathroom had a sloped ceiling over the top of the bath and the toilet, which made using the facilities a little awkward (being 6ft 2in my head was against touching the sloping ceiling). All in all a very disappointing stay in a hotel I had high expectations from having stayed in a number of De Vere hotels in the past.
Miniscule room and dismal service
When I checked in I asked what time last orders were.
I was told 21.30. I entered the dining room at 21.05, to be told (very rudely) that the restaurant was now closed. If I required food I would have to have bar food. I complained to the duty manager who was even ruder. When I suggested that his attitude was not conducive to a good review he said "I don't appreciate guests who threaten me with TripAdvisor". I went to bed without dinner.
My room was absolutely miniscule and in the eaves. I couldn't open my suitcase except on the bed without impeding either the bathroom or the door; or both. The bathroom was so compromised that there was only a bath that required some care if cracking one's head on the ceiling was to be avoided.
All-in-one a dismal experience. However the following morning they offered me a 100‰ discount and a good breakfast!
Lovely grounds but that's where it ends.
We were put in the annex (Fir Trees) the bed was decent but the room was really small. It was clean but some of the paint work was cracking so it looks a bit tired. We were informed at check-in that neither the bar area nor restaurant were available for that (Sat) night because of a wedding. We could have anything from the Bar menu in another room (tea room/library), which had low coffee tables or order room service. With only one chair in our small room we'd be eating off our laps. If we had know this at booking or before arrival, we might have chosen a different hotel or changed our expectations. The breakfast was very average buffet. Probably fine for a seminar delegate but from our experience not for a couples night away.
Sponsored Walk, No Hot Water
Was checked in to room 101 and was told to head back up the car park and to the building to the left.
Having covered the bottom and top floors around this block of rooms I called reception as room 101 could not be found. I was then informed after dragging my overnight case and laptop around that I was in room building 1 room 01, however this information would have been better explained at the start.
Having enjoyed my sponsored walk I then decided to take a shower prior to having my evening meal, however after running the shower for several minutes it was very apparent that the hot water was not present. Called reception to be told there was an issue and it was being looked into, another let down.. On the plus side the food and staff serving that night was very good.
