The Baskerville

4AA Assessed Inn Ratings explained
7 Station Road, Lower Shiplake, , Henley on Thames, RG9 3NY
With well appointed, ensuite rooms featuring luxury pocket sprung single and king size beds, the Baskerville is the perfect place to stay the night either for business or just for a leisurely break. The bar with its sporting memoribilia offers four cask ales and over 40 malt whiskies is the place to meet the locals and engage in conversation or simply to relax with the newspaper. It is cool in the summer and cosy in the winter with roaring log fires. The restaurant with an AA Dinner Award and an enjoyEngland Breakfast Award offers a modern British cuisine with continental and eastern influences. Menus change frequently to reflect seasonality and availability of produce which is locally, organically and sustainably sourced. All dishes are homemade, prepared from basic ingredients and cooked to order. Not only are they well balanced in their flavours but they are delight on the eye without being pretentious. Truly a testament to the creative flair and imagination of Head Chef, Marc Price and his brigade. We offer a wine list of over 50 bins with 12 by the glass to complement your meal. The small town of Henley-on-Thames with its many interesting shops and home to the Henley Royal Regatta and the Henley Festival is only 2 miles away. Enjoy a boat trip up the Thames or visit the River and Rowing Museum. Try a night at the Kenton theatre, the fourth oldest in England. Within the village why not stroll along to Shiplake lock and watch the river cruisers pass through. A little further up the hill is the 13th century parish church of St Mary's where Alfred Lord Tennyson was married. Further afield are the towns of Reading 7 miles, Windsor, with its castle, and nearby Legoland. 15 miles, and the university town of Oxford, 22 miles. All of these can be reached by train from Shiplake station via Twyford on First Great Western trains. Feeling a little more adventurous? Paddington station is less than an hour away with all that London can offer.
