About the hotel
Herons Farm is steeped in history and is of significant interest with its historical buildings, including an impressive listed octagonal barn. Secluded in the heart of the English countryside amidst manicured lawns, mysterious woodlands and enchanting grounds, in an area of outstanding natural beauty. We are only a 5 minutes drive from Pangbourne station, car parking at the station is £3 per day, so a train to Reading for business or pleasure is only 10 minutes and trains run very frequently approx every half an hour.
The farm is approximately 400 acres, and has an on site riding school and equestrian centre. Ideally situated for tourism, escape weekends, B&B, sporting events and holiday leisure breaks. Whether you are looking for a holiday, an escape weekend, a short break /B&B, or the business traveller seeking a mid week home from home base you will find a warm and friendly atmosphere. Summertime unveils a new dimension with the heated outdoor swimming pool hidden in the walled English country garden. Step back in time, soak up the atmosphere, enjoy some 'me time’, to ease away the tension. The secret is not travelling everyday.

One Night was One Too Many
ONE NIGHT WAS ONE TOO MANY Herons Farm Chalets, Pangbourne, Reading, Berks are basically attractive but in urgent need of better management, maintenance and adequate furnishing.
I made a reservation for sole occupancy on Saturday, 12 March to move in for at least five days on Sunday, 13 March, while work was done on my home which made it uninhabitable. My chalet appeared to be the only one let at that time. The first chalet I was shown on Sunday needed cleaning and the bed was unmade. The chalet I rented consisted of two, possible three, bedrooms but the sitting room contained only a single, two-seater settee covered with a rust stained, cream coloured throw. The downstairs, double bedroom was inadequately furnished. I had to keep my hair brush, comb and make-up on the window sill. The wardrobe contained a range of 19 ‘dress shop’ coat hangers, consisting of 16 different styles. In the kitchen the kettle had been leaking for so long that there was a lime-scale deposit round the hole in the kettle and its contents had flooded the worktop. The under sink bin contained considerable rubbish left by previous occupiers. But when. The chalet had under floor heating, but the bedroom was over heated and the sitting room was very cold, as was the floor. When I mentioned this to the owner / manager I was told that she could do nothing about that as she was not a heating engineer. Breakfast was apparently included in the £105 per night fee. I pre-ordered cereal with a banana and coffee. The following morning the choice was Corn Flakes or Bran Flakes, a third jar being empty, together with a very shrivelled apple, although after I had finished my breakfast, and without prompting a banana was produced. The large Dining Room was very attractive but in mid March, it was completely unheated. I paid by Debit Card, not to Herons Farm Cottages / Chalets, but to Cullinghood Riding Stables, another business run from the same site. However when I decided not to stay for more than the first night the balance of my payment was refunded without any problem. Please forgive my late reply, but I have been preoccupied with builders in my home.
It was one night too many for me as well. You moaned and moaned about your builders, then the local roads followed by more complaints about those in your life. You had booked a double room in the farmhouse which has an en-suite shower room, but as it was a 5 day stay I offered you Crab Apple cottage which has a shower room, you complained about that and asked for a bath, I offered to show you a different cottage, but explained that the people had just left and said we would cleaned in the morning for your second night, you agreed and said you liked it.
Crab Apple has two bedrooms, so can sleep 3 people, there are chairs in the bedrooms, and the settee has a two tone clean cover with rust coloured cushions. There is adequate storage for personal items in the bedroom - two bedside cabinets with draws and cupboards in the shower room. Later you noticed a small amount of water by the kettle about a tablespoon amount, did you put it there, you complained saying it must have been there for weeks, quite ridiculous, but I immediately replaced the kettle. I would love to see 16 different styles of coathanger, does such a thing exist. There was no rubbish.
The cottage has ground source underfloor heating, you complained that the bedroom was too warm, the kitchen was acceptable and the sitting room not warm enough, I explained that the heating would take up to an hour to adjust to your liking, I turned the bedroom thermostat down and the sitting room up, you complained bitterly and wanted an immediate heat adjustment, I did tell you even a heating engineer couldn't do that. I visited you 1.5 hrs later and the heating was to your liking. I did leave quickly as I didn't want to hear more complaints about your builders. Before leaving I explained that it is important to me that guests enjoy their time with us, but it is equally important that I enjoy the guests, so on the strength of that I said I would refund the balance of your stay and suggested you leave in the morning.
As you could see from your booking form with LateRooms breakfast was not included, you moaned about that so as a gesture of goodwill I offered a free breakfast, I could go on about your attitude but won't. The dining room was heated.
It was explained that we do accept a credit card but have to make the small charge to cover what we are charged, there is no charge for a debit card, you accepted this but then continued to complain.
I have had B&B guests for many years and have met so many fabulous people. You are the first and I hope the last person I will ask to leave.
