Good value, good location for city escape
My dad and I stayed at Arton for a week in Jan 2014.
We initially booked it as a place to crash to recover from jet-lag after our flight from UK, and planned to move on to a Backpackers down the road for the rest of our trip. However, we liked the hotel so much - and the cost was identical to a private room in a "good" hostel - that we decided to stay on. We booked a superior twin room - though a little on the small side, we left early in the morning and came back late at night, so weren't too fussed that we couldn't crack out the scrabble/swing a cat. The room was a cool respite from the humidity outside - and the beds were very comfortable. Sheets/towels were changed daily (even though we asked them not to - ah well!) and everything was clean and well-ordered. The bathroom/wetroom was roomy and had a rainforest shower. The complimentary mini bar was a nice touch, and refilled daily with cans of soda, bottled water and pringles/cookies. There is free wi-fi, which was good and speedy, and also two computers for guest use in the lobby - useful when our laptop died. There was a high turnover of staff at the front desk but the people we spoke to were very helpful and gave us lots of useful local knowledge about public transport and things we could see and do - barring one girl who told us completely the wrong info about the bus to the zoo, so we ended up somewhere completely different.
The hotel is a five minute walk from Lavender MRT, and you can get direct trains to the airport and the city centre. The neighbourhood is relatively quiet - lots of workshops selling things like motorbike parts & hiring scaffolding but gradually being gentrified with a couple of Western style cafes - so we had an organic coffee roastery next to the hotel where we got a nice coffee and croissant for breakfast one morning, and a pie shop (random!) around the corner called Windowsill Pies which was a nice place to drop into for dessert. Also a opposite the Lavender Food Centre so lots of hawker-style options for dinner, and a 15 min walk to Little India. In all, we really enjoyed our stay at Arton - fairly basic, but with the air of a more expensive place!
Small but elegant and tastefully decorated boutique hotel
Very small room, but the layout is conducive for sleep.
Big LCD/Smart TV with MioTV channels, hence if you are looking forward to SCV selection... you might be disappointed. Design of the room is very cosy, small shower that comes with Rain-shower. Basin is located outside the bathroom, good and bad depends on user preference. Mattress is super comfy!. Fluffy soft pillows (4pieces) yet very firm mattress!. Good for my back. Location is quite a walk, approximately 10mins away from lavender station. Very well surrounded by food/eating outlets. Quiet neighbourhood, but sound insulation is bad, so when someone talks loudly, its bound to be heard. Hangers provided, no cabinet. Space is well utilised as there is a small little space beneath the bed frame that fits a couple's shoes.
