a fantastic place
The food, staff, levels of cleanliness and the room were all outstanding.we would thoroughly recommend this hotel and thank all the staff for their welcome and kindliness.
When reviewing, take into account the whole.
I've read some reviews where people expect a pristine hotel, modern facilities, spaciousness etc.
But please people take into account the place and put it in context. The Sun Bay is in a village, a fishing village that has been at the heart of a charming holiday spot for many years. It's has no truly modern hotels, it's rustic, it's pretty. Any new up to date hotels would look out of place and destroy it's charm. The hotel is fine, the floor boards in my room creaked, the tv is small and so is the bathroom, they had wifi but i couldn't get it in my room, so what i'm on holiday, who needs communication with the modern world. But you know what.... all of that adds to the charm of the place and is in keeping with the village. If you want the bells and whistles, go to somewhere that does have everything and leave the rest of us to enjoy a truly British seaside village as it should be warts and all.
The staff were kind, helpful and friendly. The food was very good and the rest of the guests were chatty and friendly. I enjoyed it and had a lovely few days of peace and quiet, perfect.
Thank you for listening.
Good but could be fabulous
Friendly and helpful staff and good food in a scenic and peaceful location.
The hotel is slightly old-fashioned in style but we were not there for the decor, although we too would have preferred no background music when eating.
The room was reasonably peaceful and the bed was comfortable. We lacked a second bedside lamp (found on request) and a TV remote control (replacement on order) but there was a kettle etc for tea/coffee with biscuits. Hot water was plentiful but the shower could do with upgrading. We stayed several nights and would go back for a short break.
Rooms are in desperate need of updating
We were extremely disappointed with the room and I am fairly sure the decor was the same throughout all the rooms from the quick peeks I had through open doors.
The decor is from the 1980's, hideous wallpaper and carpets in very tired condition, massive crack in the bathroom sink, cistern leaking, paint peeling off the skirting boards, sealed unit gone in one of the windows so all misted up. Bath mat absolutely disgusting, no way were we going to stand on that. Room generally grotty, grubby finger marks around the door frame, ancient beds although bedding was nice, no matching furniture, very old white wardrobe with dark pine chest of drawers and table. Strange musty smell in room which the hotel were attempting to cover up with a very strong air freshener. Windows were very stiff to open and I thought at one point we weren't going to be able to close one of them. Woodchip on the walls in all the corridors. Complete opposite of the downstairs which was very nice and quite modern. Staff were superb however - probably trying to compensate for the state of the bedrooms!!
