Reviews - Sun Bay Hotel

3Self Classified Hotel Ratings explained
Sun Bay Hotel , Salcombe, TQ7 3HH
Welcome to the Sun Bay Hotel, near Salcombe. A family owned and run 14 bedroom hotel in South Devon. We are situated 50 yards from the 3 golden sandy beaches of Hope Cove and are on the Famous South West Coast Path.

The easy-going and informal Sun Bay Restaurant and Bar at the heart of the hotel, attracts locals who often drop in for a casual lunch, afternoon tea or dinner with friends. Eat in the restaurant or on the terrace at breakfast, take lunch in the lounge by the fire in Winter or on to the terrace in Summer and dine in our sea view restaurant in the evening.

The Sun Bay Restaurant is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week.

The towns of Salcombe and Dartmouth lie within easy reach of Hope Cove. Slightly further afield are the cities of Plymouth and Torquay.

Hope Cove is a beautiful Devon village that is a safe and unspoiled haven to escape from the hurly burly of modern life, with lovely thatched cottages and unspoiled beaches.

Rooms are in desperate need of updating
We were extremely disappointed with the room and I am fairly sure the decor was the same throughout all the rooms from the quick peeks I had through open doors. The decor is from the 1980's, hideous wallpaper and carpets in very tired condition, massive crack in the bathroom sink, cistern leaking, paint peeling off the skirting boards, sealed unit gone in one of the windows so all misted up. Bath mat absolutely disgusting, no way were we going to stand on that. Room generally grotty, grubby finger marks around the door frame, ancient beds although bedding was nice, no matching furniture, very old white wardrobe with dark pine chest of drawers and table. Strange musty smell in room which the hotel were attempting to cover up with a very strong air freshener. Windows were very stiff to open and I thought at one point we weren't going to be able to close one of them. Woodchip on the walls in all the corridors. Complete opposite of the downstairs which was very nice and quite modern. Staff were superb however - probably trying to compensate for the state of the bedrooms!!

Not recommended
We stayed in a family double room. It was very cramped full of poor quality furniture with hardly enogh room to move around. It was classed as a sea view room but it looked out onto the car parking area.
The tv was too small to see and the shower didn't work.

Room with a view
The staff were very friendly during our stay but unfortunatley we did find the room a little dated and it could have done with some housekeeping before our arrival. The bathroom door did not close which we did report but was not fixed during the time we were there. The saving grace was the location of the hotel with sea views and walking distance to the beach. Quite expensive stay for the size and quality of room, probably would not stay again as a haven for dog owners.
