Overnight at the Tradesmans Arms

My wife and I travelled down late due to work commitments.

I called ahead to inform the landlord and of our delayed journey. Due to our lateness of arrival we were shown to out room and left to our own devices. No refreshments were offered. Breakfast was offered at 9 am only because the landlord was already in bed and couldn't be disturbed. The bed was extremely uncomfortable. We left the accommodation at 08.30. Tired, hungry and unwashed (because no hot water was available.)

Response from hotel

Thank you for your review. I must correct you on a number of points....

You arrived at 10:20pm, our kitchen closes at 8:30-9:00pm. Had you of asked we would have pre-made sandwiches for you to enjoy on your arrival. We are not a 4/5 star hotel and therefore don't offer 24 hour room service. The pub closes, within reason, when the last person leaves or retires to their room. There is a complimentary hospitality tray in all rooms that includes tea, coffee and a bottle of water per person. Therefore you could have had refreshments.

As you had a late check in it was suggested you may like breakfast with the other guests at 9am. You stated you had to be in Ashburton by 9:15, so required breakfast earlier. I had not retired for the evening, and at 11pm and had a drink with a local customer at the bar and didn't close the pub until midnight. I was aware of your requirements for breakfast.

I was down at 8:00am the following morning however you had already left. During the night we had a power cut and power was not resumed until 10:30am. 1900 homes were affected. There was hot water as we have a hot water tank however unfortunately you could not shower as all the showers are electric ones. You would of known this as you had no TV, lights, shower, kettle etc and the emergency lights were on!

I have the option of asking Laterooms to remove this review as it is clearly inaccurate, however I have decided not to, and prefer to remind you exactly how your stay was!

Thank you,

Mark Mitchell,

Good hotel, lovely location

The room was very good with nice toiletries and brilliant biscuits (milk chocolate and orange and some stem ginger ones).

Staff were all very attentive and the steak I had for dinner was cooked perfectly medium rare just as I asked for it. Huge portion too. It's not 5* but then it doesn't claim to be. It's a pub with good beer and good pub grub at very reasonable prices.
