Couple from Bath
The hotel was comfortable but we felt it was in need of a bit of updating
Me and my wife enjoyed our break whilst staying at the Royal, we found the staff very accommodating, the food was buffet style which suited us as we could help ourselves to what we actually wanted to eat, both at breakfast and evening meal.
The facilities were good, we spent time in the swimming pool and watched the entertainment in the bar in the evening.
Had read some reviews about the hotel prior to our arrival.
The reception staff were more than welcoming upon arrival and checking in was no problem at all. The hotel public areas appeared dated. The only hotel guest lift was out of service for the duration of our stay. Wifi is not available throughout the hotel!!. Only in public areas. Very poor signal/no signal in our room. Lots of people sitting in the reception trying to get 'online'.
During the walk to our room it was very noticeable that the hotel was in need of some maintenance and updating. The carpets were held together with duct tape and the skylights were clearly leaking and had stained the ceiling over the stairwell. The carpet was threadbare in places.
Upon entering the room, there was a really odd smell. The room was dated. The television just about fit into the unit it was sat upon. I think this is a hazard for those with small children. The beds were adequately made. We had no issues with the beds. The room definitely needed a dust. The bathroom was horrendous. Dated 70's Stained mirror unit, black stains in the bath, mould around the tiles and bath. The shower taps would not turn off and the constant dripping of water was annoying (and costly for the hotel!). The door to the bathroom was a wooden sliding door which made an awful noise when slid back (especially during the night!). The window in the room (which wouldn't close properly) overlooked the rear car park and entrance. The entrance door made a horrible clunking sound everytime someone came out (which the smokers frequently did!). The internal corridor doors need an oil, very frustrating for those staying in rooms near the doors.
There seemed to be some confusion over what time breakfast is served. The hotels own literature states 08.30-09.30. We duly waited with a 3 year old only to find other families had been allowed to go in at 08.00. I raised this query with a young lady in the restaurant who said 'breakfast is from 8am' I again queried why their own literature stated 08.30. No answer. Please ask what time breakfast is served!. The breakfast was good for a buffet/canteen style service. Plenty of cereal and juices plenty of hot freshly cooked food, small wait for bacon. Jam and toast a plenty but the toast was very well done...and margarine. Eeeek. Great views of the sea from the restaurant. The staff in the restaurant were very efficient and friendly. Would I say this hotel is child friendly. I would say for us, no. Lots of literature both in the restaurant and the hotel 'guest info' book advise that children can't do this and can't do that. Nothing by way of toys etc for younger guests. Even most doctor/dentists surgeries provide a small amount of toys to play with. Okay if your children in your party are over 14years.
I reported the maintenance issues to reception and they were duly noted.
This hotel is the epitome of a turkey and tinsel holiday hotel. The stair lifts, style of entertainment, decor and ethos of the hotel is aimed at the age group who clearly keep this hotel 'going'. It's a shame really, that money has not been reinvested as it would really become a stand out hotel in Woolacombe. Even if it were redesigned/updated to 'Travelodge standards'. This is a big hotel and one of not many left, it would be a shame to see this hotel perish like the other large hotels, when all it needs is some TLC. Like I've already said the staff were great and couldn't fault them. Advice to hotel. Update and try to encompass the younger travellers. Diversifying never hurts....
Comfortable but dated
Overall we found the Hotel good.
The bedroom was clean and comfortable. The restaurant was very good and the staff there were excellent. However, the public rooms looked all very tired with a coat of paint needed in some places. I am glad we didn't stay in the summer as the partitions to each balcony were very rusty and in serious need of replacing. Not an inviting site to sit in!!
Time travelling back to the 60s, or even earlier
The Royal must have been lovely in the 1930s.
At a guess it was upgraded in the 50s, and perhaps again in the late 60s, or early 70s, but not much has happened since either to the decor or the menu. It's for coach parties and those in search of a cheap stay in Woolacombe (I was the latter) but I think, having seen the accommodation that other guests at the event I was there for had secured, there are far better deals to be had.
I didn't have time to use the pool but local friends said the changing rooms were not very nice. It's a shame - it could be a very good place to stay, the views are marvellous, but it needs a lot of money spent on it.
The Royal Hotel
we have stayed here before and loved it,so choose it again, its not 5* but then you are not paying 5* prices
Arduous trek to our room.
But survived. Ty.
Great place, friendly staff, highly recommended, will be going again.
Staff were great, friendly, food was excellent, well worth the money.
Bar staff and night porter were great in hospitality. Thank you for a great time, thoroughly enjoyed it. Hope to be there again.
Value for money
Although dated in parts the public areas of the hotel were clean and tidy.
Our room seemed to have had a new bed and carpet and a lick of paint(419) The bathroom was old fashioned but was clean and the bedroom itself was large and spacious even with a table and 3 chairs in it. The view from the window was not brilliant but for £78 per night including breakfast for 2 of us it was good value for money and not everyone can have a sea view can they. I can understand that people may moan about the worn out and mismatched carpets in the hallways but really for the price what can be expected. I have stayed at other more expensive hotels and had mismatched carpets and tatty paintwork. I think that basically it depends what room you are given - we were more than happy with ours . The staff were very helpful and polite and the breakfast was excellent, self service but I like that as you can help yourself to more of what you like and leave what you don't. We would return as it is good value compared to other hotels in the area. For us it had the three main things - clean, good food and good value. It could do with being modernised in places and does look tatty from the outside but if it was refurbished then you would probably expect to pay double. Lift was broken on our visit and this could be a problem for some people, also it is on slope - great on the way down to the beach but not so good on the way back.
Cheap, great for what we wanted, amazing friendly staff :)
We arrived after midnight and the South African guy at reception was awesome, really friendly super nice, chatted about waves and where we had travelled from.
He noticed our friends from the same area had signed in an hour or so before us and told us that they were in the bar. Despite it being already closed he helped us to our room then served us at the bar so we could chat with friends, and stayed until we were ready to head to our rooms. The same happened the next night after we all got back fairly late from a wedding. I couldn't fault the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, and although we missed it, we heard that the entertainment in the bar created a pretty good atmosphere too!. The place is huge an decor is pretty old school, needs tlc and smells a little like your gran's house so it's not the place if you want a luxury room to stay in, but we would definitely go back and stay there again. We were lucky and had a big bed but our friends said theirs was small and their feet were hanging off the end?. On checking out we did notice a few that seemed a fair bit smaller so could be worth checking . One thing we missed was breakfast but more our fault for not checking the times. For such a big hotel we were surprised that they only do breakfast for one hour, between half eight and half nine. So can't comment on the food, or the swimming pool as never made it there either. Anyway thanks guys and if we need a value place to stay. We would definitely come back.
