A great place with loads of atmosphere. Well-placed for exploring town.

We had a great stay here - though you do need to be fairly fit & not too plump to get to the top rooms.

On-site restaurant looks good though we didn't try it. Parking a bit of a pain but easily sortable. Pleasant staff and a really good bed!

Wells for Christmas

The hotel has very limited parking which is in the pub car park opposite.

Access to the hotel was only marred by the town being closed off for the reindeer parade. The hotel had good old fashioned character and I would certainly stay there again.

Worst stay in a while

Dreadful staircase, unclean room, shower with no pressure and freezing/scolding temperatures.

Massively impractical for work but not somewhere I would ever stay again for leisure either.

Hotel is very conveniently situated in middle of Wells, excellent food, good room, friendly helpful staff.

Stairs a little steep to upper rooms.

Room 5 at Ancient Gatehouse hotel

We stayed in room 5, which was a twin room - unfortunately all they had left as it was a late booking on my part.Hotel is in a lovely spot and I'm sure the rooms overlooking the cathedral are worth the money, but I didn't feel that ours was worth 110 pounds a night.

Our room had a sloping ceiling and both beds were under the slope, meaning that it was not possibile to sit up in bed and as there was only one small chair in the room, it was necessary to sit on the bed. I don't understand why so many hotels seem to think you will not just want to sit comfortably in your room and watch TV or something. There is no parking at the hotel, so it was necessary to unload and then park somewhere some distance away from the hotel. This is difficult for them to do much about, but they could have an arrangement with one of the local car parks to give guests a parking permit. I don't wish to be too negative about the hotel, as we did have a lovely weekend in Wells and their Italian restaurant on the ground floor is excellent & we enjoyed eating there both nights. The problem was that we had nowhere to go to be comfortable, except the neighbouring hotel lounge and various cafes.

Beautiful twin roomed bedroom.

Stairs to room 5 very steep - potential problem for seniors.

Pleasant Stay in Wells

The hotel is a little tired but the room was clean and breakfast, although served in the sister hotel across the road was quite satisfactory. We had to climb up in to the roof space (our room) by climbing up a spiral stone staircase which was not easy to manage even though we are both fit..

Saw little of the staff as the reception during the day was across the road.
