About the hotel
There has been a pub at Windmill Hill for around 200 years. The owners, Chris and Janet Slow, are celebrating their 16th year and in that time have built up a reputation for very good food and drink in a warm and friendly atmosphere. The pub is run in a relaxed, informal manner allowing you to enjoy a drink, some food or celebrate a special occasion in the Barn, a separate venue behind The Square and Compass.
The Barn, in the generous garden grounds behind the pub, offers the perfect venue for weddings, conferences and parties set in beautiful Somerset countryside. Large gardens, seating and modern facilities make the Barn suitable for all manner of occasions. Situated between Taunton and Ilminster and within easy reach of Lyme Regis and The Jurassic Coast (18 miles), the Square and Compass is set in it’s own large grounds. Overlooking the Blackdown Hills it is surrounded by rolling fields and beautiful countryside. The Blackdown Hills is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Find us on the map. The pub is a well-known destination for those seeking home cooked food and employs fully qualified chefs with an emphasis on quality in a very relaxed atmosphere. The interior features wooden ceiling beams and heavy hand-made wooden furniture. In the winter there is always a roaring log fire. The Stables: Eight brand new high quality double rooms have just been added to the pub, making the venue ideal for weddings, enabling guests to now stay at the venue. This also makes the Square and Compass an ideal location for holiday makers looking to explore Somerset, The Blackdowns and the Jurassic Coast. The Barn Venue: In addition to the pub itself, the barn offers a purpose built venue for weddings, conferences, music and parties. The Barn has a civil licence for weddings and a fully licensed bar, modern toilets and large dance area. The professional music & sound system increases it’s appeal and scope for all other types of gathering.

Comfortable room, friendly helpful staff, and good pub grub at a reasonable price.
This is a lovely area, and gives you close access to many places of interest.
Nice country pub
I stay here regularly when I'm working in the vicinity.
The pub is a nice 'local' establishment with a good range of beers, good food in the evenings and a decent breakfast in the morning. The accommodation is clean and comfortable - in what looks like a stable block. I recommend it to anyone who is fed up with staying in sterile, all the same, chain hotels such as Premier Inns.
