End of the Great Glen Way

Small shabby room at the very furthest reaches of the hotel.

As usual with many city hotels, the reception looked welcoming and 'polished' but the standard rooms ordinarily a disappointment. At first I didn't think the key had unlocked the door as I had to shoulder it to gain access; probably run out of energy as lift was broken and had to climb/walk half a mile to the room. However, the access door positively glided open compared to the bathroom door which must have dropped a couple of inches since hanging; virtually immovable. The TV was the very cheapest money could buy, likewise the bed and mattress. Okay, it's a city centre hotel in a good location but at £79 on late rooms, totally totally overpriced. During my trek I stayed at guest houses which were palatial in contrast and literally half the price. I was on my own so no great shakes, but if I'd booked a couple of nights with my family I'd definitely have had something to say. Not good at all; far more care and attention required. The manager needs to visit room 325 (?), end of the corridor on the left hand side, and question whether they perceive it to be value for money before they write off another reviewers 'unjustified' rant. As for breakfast, very basic, cheap packet jams, no marmalade/marmite and when I went to get a slice of toast came back to see my coffee and everything else had been cleared away, l'd only had a sip. At least confirm the guest has actually left the room before clearing their table. As with many other hotels it could be great, but treat the guests to what they deserve (they've chosen your hotel to stay in) not simply as cash in the bank, they won't return and will invariably write rubbish reviews.

Columba Hotel - a Bespoke Hotel

We have stayed at the Columba before and stayed in one of the suites which was a treat however this previous visit we booked a cheap room which we found a tad small and had an unpleasant smell of damp.

We accept that we got what we paid for and cant fault anything else. Hotel in great location and service excellent.

Night in Inverness

We stayed at the Columba hotel for one night whilst up in Inverness visiting relatives.

Unfortunately we arrived early and were told check in was not until 3pm (which I found a little late). So since we had arrangements for the afternoon, we had to come back later which meant not checking in until 7pm. The room was very clean, but unfortunately no river views as it was situated at the back of the building. The room was very small and also next to the lift and stairs for that floor, so also fairly noisy. Breakfast was good with a large choice of hot and cold food.

Value for money.

Cheap hotel room, slightly dated decor but I would stay again

I didn't try the breakfast room but the bistro next door for dinner was very nice.

Lovely stay

Columba Hotel received me extremely well.

The location is excellent, the room and bathroom were perfect and the staff was most kind. I had a perfect time in Inverness and Loch Ness, and the accommodation was a great part of it.

Columba Hotel - a Bespoke Hotel

Although I have marked the room down, it is still good value and would not stop me staying here again.

Mixed experience

The hotel itself is set in a nice location overlooking the river and castle.

Initially I was given a pretty decent room for the price and would have been perfectly happy to stay there except the following day I received a phone call from the management informing there was to be work done on a window. I wasn't sure what they meant so I thanked them for letting me know as it didn't occur to me that they could have scheduled work on a room in which a guest was staying. When the work started I was completely dumbfounded - the guy was practically in the bathroom hammering on this window with bits of plaster flying inside. I went to complain and at first they attempted to tell me that they had asked me if it was okay and if I had said no they wouldn't have gone ahead. Why on earth would you expect a guest to have to agree to building work. Then when we were inside the room the manager claimed the house service would clear up the mess. Hilarious. He then offered me another room and I agreed; they moved me to a larger room with a great view of the castle, which I was really happy with in the beginning. Later that night I found damp in the corner, a rip in the sheets which didn't fit the end of the bed properly and rusted towel bars in the bathroom which could have done with updating. Someone upstairs decided that 3 am was a good time to stomp around on the creaky floorboards though that isn't really the hotels issue I suppose. Old buildings creak. I won't stay here again.
