The Met Hotel
The Hotel Metropole in Leeds is listed as a 4 star hotel and I booked it through laterooms.com and it was at the top of their list for reviews.
This is why I was as disappointed with it as I had searched for the best 4 or 5 star hotel in Leeds city centre and according to the reviews this was it. Had I just booked it on price or location I would not be so critical of it. When you arrive it looks very grand, a Victorian building and modern foyer. It’s just 3 minutes from the railway station which was good as we had arrived by train. We were able to drop our bags off before booking in which was nice so we could wander around Leeds easier. We checked in later and were given a room on the 5th floor, we had booked what was listed as a superior room and on opening the door it was very clear it was not. It was small, grotty, paper peeling off the wall and a gale blowing through the bathroom from a window with holes in it. The room was cold with only a tiny radiator and thin bedding, we went straight back down to reception and complained. The desk clerk was apologetic and helpful but another room was not offered but extra bedding and a heater was and duly arrived, the heater made the room nice and warm and the extra bedding we did not use after that. We did not eat at the hotel as the menu was not inspiring we thought but did use the bar. Initially I thought beer was expensive at £4.20 a pint but after using other places in the city centre actually it was the same price as everywhere else. It was a lovely pint of Boddingtons though and a few were enjoyed lol, also it was a quite bar without music playing so you could enjoy a quiet pint.
The next day we had our breakfast which was included in our room, normally it would be £12 each. Well I never thought I would find anywhere that offers a worse breakfast than a travel inn. It was a buffet type with rubber toast with butter that tasted like cheap margarine, tasteless luke warm hot food and warm orange juice with bitter coffee. If it had not been included I would not have gone again on day two but Wetherspoon’s just up the road. The food was poor and I think most people felt the same as most left plates half full. OK buffet food is never as good as made fresh and can be not as hot but this was poor, even when fresh was put out it was cool and not nice. It was a case of eat it fast otherwise it was cold fast. We when returned very tired that afternoon the foyer was heaving with people from a conference which as it turned out was a regular thing and the foyer often packed, also the lift was out of order. Ok it’s not their fault the lift broke down and the hotels handy man (I think) was there and very kindly took us up in the service lift which he did not have to do but did out of kindness, all the staff were very nice in the hotel. When I tried to open our room though the credit card key had failed and I had to walk down and up 5 flights of stair as well as wait ages at the reception to be seen, I do hate those card door keys. To sum up the Metropole it has lovely staff, nice architecture, a lovely pint of Boddingtons, a good location but a poor room and poor breakfast. It was our anniversary and I deliberately booked a high star hotel only to get a room that was worse than a 2 star or no start hotel and a breakfast like you would get on a motorway services at 2 in the morning. Actually that’s not fair the motorway ones are better. I have to wonder if we hadn't booked with LateRooms.com would we have had a better room and the fact it was LateRooms.com we got one of the poor rooms. All in all not the trip I had planned.
I don't have a major issue with my stay.
I just think for the same price, I'd get a lot more for my money at somewhere like premier inn.
My room was cold too. I also had a room that was overlooked by the building opposite.
