Lovely place to stay
Really enjoyed the location and setting.
The food was excellent and the staff super friendly.
A great find.
Found this pub purely by chance, as was attending the International Air Tattoo and all the accommodation closer to that was booked up.
We stayed for one night, great welcome from the staff. Room was excellent, food was marvellous, though not cheap, but was all home cooked.
What a wonderful stay.
The welcome, the room, the food, all were exceptional. We had pre-booked a table in the restaurant (recommended) where the food was delicious, as was breakfast the next morning (local, high-quality ingredients superbly prepared). The room was characterful, the bed really comfortable and all the attention to detail made it a wonderful stay. I can't rate it highly enough.
Friendly welcome a fantastic room, very clean and very comfortable and good beer, what more could a chap want.
Food in the restaurant was excellent but just watch the prices; my food was too good and I spent way to much. All-in-all I can't recommend this hotel highly enough.
White Horse Inn, Calne
great location, lovely pub and staff
Lovely peaceful setting, fantastic food
We stayed for 2 nights to be in the area for a family party.
The room was clean, warm, stocked with everything we needed (including some yummy crisps) and looked out onto their animals - sheep, pigs and geese. The bed was particularly comfortable and the location was very quiet which meant we had a really good nights sleep. Breakfast was a good selection of continental and cooked, definitely set us up well for the days. We ate at the restaurant one evening and the food deserves a special mention. The service was very efficient and our meals were amazing, we managed 3 courses each and couldn't fault any of them. We have now stayed here (and eaten) twice and wouldn't hesitate to book again.
Will be coming back with friends
I cannot say enough good things about the White Horse.
I was greeted warmly upon arrival, and given an explanation of procedures. Check in is the bar, which is a bit odd, but you do get to know both the locals and fellow guests right away. One table of them said I hoped their party did not disturb me later, but the noise did not carry much from other rooms, and not at all from the bar, which is good, because the place was packed with guests, locals, dogs, and folks in for the restaurant. All were friendly, but I think I might have had a better time if I were sharing a table (yes, I did invite people to share my small table). I had been upgraded to a double room on the ground floor, which had a lovely view of the local sheep and ducks, and of a patio which I could not find my way out to. I didn't want to push too hard on the doors for fear of breaking them, so I just took pictures through the glass. Other folks had found a way to enjoy their patio seating, however. The welcome tray was incredible. Two bags of kettle chips, Glastonbury still and sparkling water, a plentiful bowl of tea and coffee options, and 4 cookies from the kitchen. The bathroom held a lovely assortment of body care products that smelled heavenly, and the shower was hot and powerful. There is a TV, but not a user-friendly guide. There is no phone in the room, and as the clock was not plugged in and set, you might find yourself without a wake-up call, which could be an issue as breakfast is only on for one hour. It was also an issue as I needed a cab to get into town, could not call one myself, and was told no staff are around to help until 8am, rough when you need a cab there at 9. As there is no power strip, you have to unplug lamps if you need to plug in your computer, but there is free wifi in both guest rooms and the bar.
I had asked about dinner since I had not prebooked, and was told there was one small table left in the bar, but when I returned from dropping my bags in the room, there was someone sitting at it, and it appeared to be a worker going off shift. Do book ahead for meals. You will want to eat here, and it will be full. There is a good sized wine list, which could use some pairing suggestions, as there is no sommelier, and the place is extremely busy, so getting help is difficult. I had the cream of celeriac soup, which was nice, but could have used a touch of personality, like perhaps some white pepper to offset some of the sweetness. The pea and mint risotto had a similar issue. It was tasty, and the addition of the pea tendrils was nice, but it was a little bland. The stars of the meal were actually the homemade herbed rolls and the best chocolate dessert I khave had in the country. Ben's chocolate orange offering from Master Chef was so good I took it with me so as not to waste any. There was a large orange seed on my plate which could have ruined things had I not noticed it. I did call it to the landlady's notice, and she said it showed they were using real fruit. Breakfast the next day offered a number of choices including the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs which I had, the full English had by most of the room, a lovely fresh fruit salad, freshly baked pastries and more. It can be had for £12.95 if you are not a hotel guest. Probably worth it, but very slow service. I finally got help with the cab from Zoe, the woman cleaning the bar, and made it to my meeting on time. This place would be perfect sacs romantic getaway. I will be back, definitely to eat, and will bring friends.
The White Horse Inn
Very nice and friendly hotel.
Would definitely recommend
Lovely setting and a friendly and thoughtful team
From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome.
The staff team are all friendly and helpful. The rooms are spotless, bright and we'll appointed with comfortable beds, ample storage and a good shower. Our room was on the ground floor with a small patio and chairs outside and a view of the paddock with sheep, pigs and geese. We also enjoyed an evening meal here which was well cooked and beautifully presented. A very enjoyable stay.
Idyllic Location and Wonderful Comfort
Cleanliness: immaculate everywhere.
Comfort: very good indeed. Slightly superior duvets would make it perfect. Food: very good, well executed and presented. Customer service: excellent. A warm welcome and eager to please. It takes an awful lot of hard work to run an establishment within the service industry and the owners have nailed it. A really delightful place to stay. Would not hesitate to recommend.
