About the hotel
What to do with a tired coaching inn on the main A35? With 15 pubs closing every week, and a double dip recession, some would say it is not the best time to take on a village pub of over 3,000sq m, with 5 letting rooms. Not that Sandy Duncan the new owner of the Coach & Horses would let this effect her vision of what was required of a pub in 2012. A coffee lounge with real coffee and tea served the traditional way in China cups from a china teapot.
Homemade cakes a Victoria sponge, coffee and walnut cake, scones, and the option of afternoon tea or cream tea served on a tiered cake stand. The vision was to decorate the coffee lounge with real style and eloquence. Reclaimed wood floors, open fires easy chairs and low tables all lit by chandeliers. Creating an atmosphere of calm and tranquillity with daily newspapers to enjoy or free wifi. Then a bar area with high leather stools and poser tables, a choice of four real ales, accompanied by lagers and a range of new ciders to suit all ages The 100 seater restaurant with a theatre kitchen home to a traditional clay pizza oven and chargrill, watch the chef create your meal. The wood floors and chandeliers all adding to the ambience while in the winter months open fires will create an even cosier feel. our team of chefs have created a menu full of local produce, from Portland Crab to Ashley Chase Cheese, West Bay Lobster to lemon sole. ( summer menu) The Chargrill is bursting with daily special of fish and steak, or fancy a pizza. Thin crust, just like the Italians make them we can offer thicker crusts or stuffed crusts. beer batted fish and chips , or our new burger menu. please call for restaurant opening times latest check in 8pm no guests after 8pm please call for reception opening times winter food times last food orders at 7pm last drink orders 8. 30pm summer food times last food orders 8. 30pm last drink orders 9pm

One night stay
We stayed overnight at The Coach and Horses and decided to book a table only to be told that the kitchen closed at 8pm which seemed a little early for a Saturday night!.
I had the veg burger with sweet potato chips and salad, was nicely presented and tasty. my husband had a steak with chips, he counted 12 chips, some sort of side salad would have been nice. Whilst we were eating there was a strong smell of disinfectant, slightly off putting whilst eating a meal. the floor the opposite end of the bar was being mopped. The room itself was large, clean and updated although faced a busy main road hence a lot of traffic noise which did abate around 11 pm. bathroom was in a 70's time warp but was large and functional. Staff were friendly and helpful!
