About the hotel
We are situated in the picturesque village of Broadwey which despite effectively now forming part of a built up area Mill Street is not yet entirely spoilt. It still boasts the charm of its old mill houses constructed of local Portland stone and enhanced by their stone mullion windows. Next door to the Manor is St Nicholas parish church which the Normans began building.
It contains some beautiful stone carvings and a carved oak pulpit of Shakespeare’s time. Mill Street leads down to the sparkling stream The Wey which originates in the entrancing village of Upwey. It was on the ridge of the hills of Upwey looking over the Chesil Beach to the channel that Thomas Hardy wrote the opening scene of The Dynasts his greatest piece of work. The Manor is situated close to the beautiful English countryside that was the inspiration for Thomas Hardy's novels. Luckily Dorset has still retained more of the richness and variety of its landscapes than has been saved elsewhere in southern England, visiting Dorset you will be able to see that the dream-like landscapes he conjured up in his writings actually existed. The county is unusual in that there are no motorways devouring the landscape it is largely rural, peaceful, and unspoilt, an ideal place to escape the rat race. Goes without saying there are both scenic and challenging walks/cycle routes right from our front door; and within a short drive you can explore the beauty of the Jurassic coastline. If travelling by public transport Upwey train station is but a five minutes walk, and bus stops close by. There are two rooms on the ground floor which have level access; all rooms have ensuite showers and there is a spacious wet room type bathroom with bath and shower for guests use on ground floor. There is open working fireplaces in dinning room and guests lounge. We welcome dogs in ground floor rooms. There is a decking and patio area in the garden which guests are welcome to use
