About the hotel

Smugglers Cottage, situated in Ferndown, is over 400 years old, and, as its name suggests, was frequently used by smugglers many years ago who had landed at Poole Harbour as a waypoint on their journey to the mainland. Smugglers Cottage at Ferndown was one of many such places along the south coast. Concealed by woodland, the cottage was the perfect place for smugglers to meet, drink, share and fight without disturbance from others who may be less inclined to agree with their practices.

The cottage was featured in the BBC Home & Gardens magazine, and many of the older timbers are aptly from a shipwrecked Spanish galleon, at St Albans Head. After many years in the sea, the wood has absorbed the sea salt and is now as hard as ebony. Smugglers Cottage has been a bed and breakfast of sorts since the early 1930's and offers comfortable accommodation with freshly cooked breakfast from locally sourced suppliers, free WIFI and car parking facilities.

One for the rustic or hardy traveller

Too expensive for what was offered.

Room cold and as heating switched off I had to ask for extra heating that was heavy and I had to carry up stairs myself. TV was very small and did not work in my room, neither did the WIFI. Breakfast was too late at 8.30am start so left without it.

Dear Guest

I am so sorry that we fell so far below your expectations. I did try, on quite a few occasions during your stay, to satisfy your very many needs.

You told me that you normally stay in a national chain which is suitable for you as you know exactly what you will get. However, I don't even think that they keep their heating on during the summer. I also apologise for

being unable to carry the heater up to your room but sadly a back condition prevented me from doing so.

I do hope that if you come to this area again you will find somewhere more suitable to your needs.

With kind regards

Victoria Garlick
