About the hotel
Smugglers Cottage, situated in Ferndown, is over 400 years old, and, as its name suggests, was frequently used by smugglers many years ago who had landed at Poole Harbour as a waypoint on their journey to the mainland. Smugglers Cottage at Ferndown was one of many such places along the south coast. Concealed by woodland, the cottage was the perfect place for smugglers to meet, drink, share and fight without disturbance from others who may be less inclined to agree with their practices.
The cottage was featured in the BBC Home & Gardens magazine, and many of the older timbers are aptly from a shipwrecked Spanish galleon, at St Albans Head. After many years in the sea, the wood has absorbed the sea salt and is now as hard as ebony. Smugglers Cottage has been a bed and breakfast of sorts since the early 1930's and offers comfortable accommodation with freshly cooked breakfast from locally sourced suppliers, free WIFI and car parking facilities.

The mattress was very soft, the blanket covers on the beds were very old fashioned.
The bathroom was freezing, I found an earwig on the chair in the room, landlady came into our room when we were out (no locks on doors) and left a message on our bed about breakfast.
Dear Mrs Saunders,
Thank you for your review and we are sad that you did not enjoy your stay at Smugglers Cottage. I knew Mr Saunders was not happy as he was off hand to the point of rudeness when you both arrived, even the other guests remarked on his behavior following your departure from the breakfast table the following morning. That was not a good omen! We cannot provide the exact type of mattress for each guest and we are sorry the mattress was not to your liking. I'm not sure why you felt the bathroom was cold as the
bedroom heating is practically next to the bathroom. With a cob wall we are unable to fit a heater in the bathroom itself added to which the walls are not straight as in a modern bathroom. Coming now to the earwig. We are in a very old property in the country and although I would quite like to make a sign saying "earwigs not allowed" I don't think they can read!! It is certainly not a sign of uncleanliness I can assure you. It is very kind of you to address me as a landlady as we are not running an Inn nor a boarding house. We like many, many B & B's in this country are not commercially run, we are a private home. We are well aware we are not for everyone, but most
of our guests enjoy staying and being surrounded by our large collection of antiques. As in most private houses our doors do not have outside locks only a stable lock to the inside. Nobody in our over fourteen years of being here has suffered a loss, we work on trust. Even if there were locks on the doors, I woulds still have access to each room with a master key. I left a note for all our guests reminding them that the clocks were to go forward that night, nobody else complained, most thanking me for the reminder.
I do hope should you come to the area again that you find somewhere more appropriate for your needs.
With kind regards,
