The Ordinary Made Extraordinary

A six hundred mile journey which started at 4 am had tired both driver and passenger.

The passenger was a 7 year old beagle present because her owner was in hospital. The location was a dreary M6 service station and the time mid evening. The fun of the chase was over. We needed at least to get to the M4. The rest of the journey could await a new day. Firing up LateRooms on my iPad found the Plough Inn, North of Swindon. Room available, pets welcome, fantastic price. Booking done and SatNav primed with postcode we were on our way. Within an hour or so a welcome "you have reached your destination" was heard. There is nothing extraordinary about the Plough Inn. It is middle England encapsulated. A high street pub serving a small community. Bar full, with darts being thrown and pool balls struck. Groups of locals all talking to each other and everyone welcoming intruders. Cheerful landlord behind his bar checks his laptop and confirms the booking. Within minutes I am shown a clean and comfortable room. Everyone is happy to help: where to park,; where to walk the dog and how to get her in and out during the night; where to wash and bathe; where to eat ("good pizza 400 yards up the road"); and, even a full explanation of why Highworth is better than Swindon Town. Suddenly the burden of travel is lifted and spirits are revived. The friendliness of the welcome, the no fuss service and the simplicity of everything one needs being there and working was enough. Sated with local pizza and cider, we awoke refreshed and revived. So, thank you Plough Inn. You provided just what we needed and at great value too. I would certainly return and definitely recommend you to others. And in one respect you were truly extraordinary: your dog, a truly handsome blue weimaraner wouldn't be found in any five star hotel. Now he beats chocolates on the pillow and well stocked minibars every day of the week. He even managed to turn the normally bumptious beagle coy. Now that is an achievement!

Very basic but adequate

What can you expect for £30.

A very basic room with a bed, no chair or wardrobe and a shared bathroom. Very friendly hosts and I think friendly dogs, made up a little for the lack of facilities. If you need a bed for the night near Swindon you may not find one as cheap as this.
