Lovely old country house hotel
Quite a last-minute booking and we weren't sure what to expect, but were very impressed with this hotel and would definitely stay there again when we're next in the area.
Friendly helpful staff, lovely rooms (we stayed in Room 2 - huge with a lovely sleigh bed and dual aspect; our son was in Room 3 which was also perfectly suited to his needs) and an excellent breakfast ticked all our boxes. Note that this is not a modern hotel: the furniture and fittings may not be to everyone's taste, and the water pressure was variable - but the wifi was free and as fast as any of the modern chain hotels I've stayed in on business trips in the past year.
Beds bad,breakfast good,staff indifferent,pleasant location.
Mattresses main bug bear, basically worn out with springs clearly digging in.
After strong complaint after one bad night a thick quilt put on worst bed to cushion discomfort next night & then given another room..beds still so bad we used pillows to stop springs & sag a little..we had to search for our bags as they hadn't moved them from old room when we came in that night at 10. No apologies or concern,or offer to reduce bill which we were asked to pay on arrival..something I have never heard of before especially as they already had card details.
Constant changes of reception staff & elsewhere & no management present that we could see so no continuity or personal interest, except for last breakfast (which was always quickly served & good..apart from continental, which was packaged) when waitress (Hannah showed real concern as she had tried to improve mattress 2nd night for me with topper). Our first room was very uncared for, many cobwebs, windows left open, though staff smoked by one so we had to shut them..& through the partition doors could hear easily next door neighbours, obviously usually a family suite with ours annexed for kids (as very narrow single beds). Next room apart from beds better.
Lovely building in pleasant setting,so much potential if management cared more about training many of the staff in customer relations & spent money on decent beds. Very disappointing!
