The perfect base for a visit to Dublin
A charming oldie world hotel thats a world away from the souless travelodges, I found this a top hotel for my stay in Dublin. The hotel are in Georgian terraces and is a lot bigger on the inside than it appears on the outside. As you entered the reception, the classic look of the rooms is obvious with grandfather clocks etc. scattered about, but all the furniture is probably pretty new or well cared for. Walking up the stairs to the rooms, the steps and the floor creaked rather a bit, but that just added to the charm. The rooms themselves (opened with proper keys, none of those modern swipe cards here) were tastefully decorated and spotless and had traditional cupboards with drawers and a proper wardrobe. The bathroom consisted of a traditional bath with a tap operated shower, although sometimes the temperature did vary when you were in it. The bath also felt slippery when climbing into or out and could have done with some sort of anti-slip coating on the bottom of it. The creaking floor meant you could here someone walking about in the room above you which could wake you during the night, but this is only a minor drawback. Breakfast was pretty good with a buffet for cereals and a waiter service for the full Irish although the portions were a little bit on the small side. There is a bar in a converted cellar where you could have an evening meal. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings there is live Irish music there and with a pint (or two) of Guinness, is a perfect way to end the day. The hotel is well placed being only 5 minutes walk from the top of O'Connell street where halfway down the frequent hop-on-hop-off buses will take you to all the major attractions in the city. A 15 minute walk would place you in the heart of Dublin. Access to the hotel is good with the nearest stop for the airport express buses being a 5 minute walk away. The railway stations are a little further, with Connolly station being a 30 min walk (although you could shorten it by taking the LUAS tram from the bottom of O'Connell street). Heuston station is rather too far to walk, but a 10 minute walk to the bottom of O'Connell street will again take you to the LUAS trams which would whisk you to the station in minutes. Top notch hotel at a good price !

Castle Hotel - Dublin
