3Self Classified Hotel Ratings explained
The Croft Hotel Croft on Tees, Darlington, DL2 2ST
Nestled in the historic village of Croft-on-Tees with free WI-FI and parking, just 8 minutes from Darlington via the A66, this 18th Century property offers quiet surroundings, riverside views, cosy accommodation. Originally built in 1835, this old coaching inn has been lovingly renovated into a traditional-yet-stylish country hotel. Sympathetically combining period features with modern decor it cultivates a wonderfully vibrant, yet relaxing atmosphere. The peaceful nature of its surroundings is further complemented by its position in front of The Croft Bridge, with marvellous views of the River Tees and St Peter’s Church, supposedly where Lewis Carroll was inspired to write Alice in Wonderland. Offering a friendly warm welcome, great hospitality and a convenient location it is the perfect place for both business and leisure travellers alike.

Each of the 20 en-suite rooms have been decorated and furnished to the highest of standards. Comfort and relaxation are implicit in their design and all rooms come fully equipped with all the necessary conveniences one would expect from a hotel of this calibre. Including: bath/shower combo, TV, Egyptian cotton linen, hairdryer and tea & coffee making facilities. For those who can’t leave the office behind, there is also a work desk, direct-dial telephone and free Wi-Fi access. Some rooms have beautiful views of Croft Bridge and St Peter's Church. Double and Twin room types are available or guests can upgrade to a more spacious Superior Room with either King or Queen Size beds.

The on-site restaurant serves up a delicious range of tasty dishes, specialising in traditional English cuisine with contemporary influences. The extensive menu is sure to offer something to whet even the most discerning of appetites. Committed to using locally sourced produce wherever possible, the hotel has garnered an impressive local reputation for the quality of its food. What’s more, also offered is a sumptuous range of bar snacks, a delightful lounge menu and even packed lunches and breakfast on the go. With a warm casual atmosphere it is the perfect place to unwind after a long day or to enjoy a drink (or two!) with some friends.

With a location that is convenient, accessible and picturesque it is no surprise to learn that the Hotel is a great venue for hosting events. With several dedicated function rooms they offer the flexibility and the space to cater for all kinds of business conferences and meetings. It is also a fantastic place for weddings and other special occasions.

Despite its quiet location in the peaceful village of Croft-on-Tees, the hotel is just an 8 minute drive from Darlington via the A66, not half an hour from Middlesbrough and 50 minutes by car to Newcastle. Offering complimentary on-site parking it is both convenient and easily accessible. Darlington train station offers excellent transport links to most major destinations across the UK. For those flying in, Newcastle Airport is less than an hour’s drive away; alternatively Durham Tees Valley International Airport is just a twenty minute taxi ride from the Hotel.

The surrounding area offers a wealth of fantastic tourist attractions and sites of interest. Indeed, just across the road from the Hotel is St Peter’s Church which was home to the Reverend Dodsworth, father to renowned author Lewis Carroll. Croft-on-Tees is where Carroll wrote several of his books and many historians believe that the inspiration for the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland was born from a carving in the church. Croft is a well known name among fans of motorsports and just 5 minutes from the hotel is the popular Croft circuit. Hosting a range of events from thrilling championship races and tournaments to track tests and opportunities to test drive some of the world’s most famous race cars, it is a great day out for the whole family to enjoy. A 25 minute drive from the hotel is the historic market town of Richmond. Little changed over the centuries it features a Norman Castle, Georgian architecture, cobbled streets, monuments and abbeys, breathtaking scenery and much more besides. Beautiful, inspirational and full of wonder, it remains one of the most rewarding places to visit in England. The town of Darlington is renowned as the birthplace of the modern railway and the Railway Museum houses the original Locomotion No. 1, which pulled the first train on the Darlington to Stockton Railway. For lovers of culture, Darlington’s two outstanding arts venues, the Civic Theatre and Arts Centre continue to offer residents and visitors a diverse range of entertainment and arts opportunities.

Business Break
Thank you for a good experience. Although this was a business trip, the hotel has a relaxing atmosphere but remains professional. The staff were friendly, courteous and willing to help if we needed anything.

This hotel provided good quality and value for money experience
We had an evening meal which was very good and having an individually prepared breakfast was excellent. Our room while large it lacked personality and the plumbing does need an overhaul as it was noisy and the shower proved hard to control the temperature.
Overall we enjoyed our stay

Over priced
I thought the accommodation was grossly over priced. The bedroom was basic and the bathroom was shabby it had no towel rail only a window ledge to put personal toiletries and 2 big holes in the wall. Breakfast was ok, but for the price I would have liked more choice such as fresh fruit.

It was a shame the restaurant was so quiet and lacked atmosphere as the food and service were faultless.....perhaps there was a function on elsewhere nearby??? We had a fantastic table next to patio doors on a very warm evening, the best in the room! Staff were very friendly, warm and welcoming. Esp the waiter for dinner and at breakfast, my husband and I thought he was a really engaging young man. The lady owner was a pleasure to talk to and made us feel very welcome, despited us confusing her with requests for wine buckets and wine.... She know what I mean!

Very helpful and friendly
For all sorts of silly reasons we didn't arrive until about 3am, but the night staff were available to let us in, and were happy to find us drinks! In the morning, reception were allowed us a late check-out after breakfast, which was appreciated and gave us a chance to catch up on rest and relax a little. Nice place, nice people.
The room was pleasant, and the hotel is in a lovely area just outside Darlington. We would like to come back again some time and have a better look around.
