Would we stay again? Probably Not but it wasn't horrendous

For the price I was not expecting it to be amazing and really we just wanted ok accommodation for a couple of nights, not too expensive, access to a pool and something that the kids would enjoy and so to be fair that is probably what we got.

I have to admit that my initial impression wasn't great when I went up to the reception and queued behind ten people who were all complaining about various things. While I queued I looked around the signs up on the reception front, the majority of which were saying 'violence against staff will not be tolerated' (which made me wonder if I was in a benefits centre rather than holiday accommodation) and then some others that said 'we are at full capacity so please don't ask to be moved to alternate accommodation'. It didn't help to create an inviting atmosphere. The staff were obviously very stressed with a busy check in on a Monday evening but they all seemed to be dealing with it quite well and were perfectly polite and helpful when ever I was at the reception. Some of the complaints that I overheard were quite funny really, in particular the man who was complaining that it appeared that his electricity meter had been fixed as he had been watching tv and had the heating on for a few hours and it hadn't gone down from £2.70. And there seemed to be a scramble by all guests to get additional pillows, which I understood once I saw the flat pancakes that were the pillows in our accommodation. The accommodation wasn't the best, however it wasn't awful. It had definitely been cleaned before we got there but it could have done with a little bit more, particularly the floor. Our little one is crawling and after a little bit of crawling around the laminate flooring his clothes were absolutely black, we ended up not letting him crawl around anymore, which is not an easy feat. The bathroom looked clean, and so did the kitchen and the items in the kitchen. The lighting in the lounge was awful, it was that bright kind of lighting that makes you feel like you are sat in a factory warehouse. A little bit of soft lighting would not have gone a miss for making the lounge feel a little bit more comfortable. As we walked around the complex we noticed that some of the apartments had nice soft lighting so we were obviously just one of the unlucky ones that didn't. It was not relaxing for sitting and chilling out at night at all with that light.

The bedroom was a decent size and so was the main room. The one thing that shocked me was how small the sofa bed was that we were supposed to sleep in in the lounge area. My husband is 6ft 4, but we have never had any problem any where else we have stayed. However this sofa bed was just way too small and really not designed to be used on a regular basis, it was so uncomfortable to sleep on. It dipped in the middle from being used too much. I ended up sleeping in the room with the children and pushing the two beds together but the mattresses in there were either so cheap or so used that they were uncomfortable too (and I am definitely not some princess and the pea kind of person, I can usually get a good nights sleep in most places). I wasn't best pleased that when we got to the accommodation the bed linen that was included in the price when we booked it was not actually in the room. So we had to go back to reception to pick it up. They gave it to us straight away with no problems though. It wasn't the greatest quality but I didn't really expect much more. There was a good amount of parking and we didn't have any trouble finding a spot, as we went in the car parks behind the apartments, and there were loads of spaces there even later in the evening. We were over the other side of the complex from the reception and main part of the complex so we were lucky that we didn't get any noise from there. There was a bit of noise from the apartment above, due to it being laminate flooring and them having a little bit of a get together one night, but it wasn't anything too bad. I was pleased with the vouchers in our pack for a free bottle of wine and free breakfast for us all. Both of which we used on the last day - I have to say the wine was better than the breakfast. I was glad we hadn't gone half board if the breakfast was a reflection of the quality of food. The scrambled egg and sausages had no taste at all, and the juices were far from being fresh juice. However I was grateful for the free breakfast.

We used the pool for both days that we were there, I wouldn't say that it was the cleanest of pools that I have ever seen but it wasn't horrible and it seemed to be well run and both of our children had a really great time in there. It was perfect for our little ones as there are some small slides which were great for their age and confidence in water. It did get quite busy in both the big pool and the baby pool at times but then it would clear out a little bit later and be fine. It could do with some more changing rooms as there always seemed to be a queue in the ladies changing area. as there were always lots of women and their children as well and there were only 5 or 6 changing rooms. I was really annoyed that we needed tokens for our little ones to go on the trampolines and inflatables outside reception, surely that should be included in the price, that is the whole point of going to a pontins isn't it. It was late the first night we got there so we didn't go over to this bit of the park, then the next day we were out for the whole day, so on the last day we promised our little girl that after we had been swimming she could go on the trampolines etc, however after waiting for it to stop raining we ran out so she could go on only to find out that we had to buy tokens and it was a minimum spend of £5. There was no way I was paying £5 for her to have a quick go on the trampoline before we set off for home so we told her no, but I was really annoyed that it wasn't included in the price.

We did nip to the soft play area for a bit but because it was raining outside so had everyone else and it was so crowded that it wasn't the nicest to be honest. I would not have wanted to spend any longer than the hour or so that we were in there or it would have been very depressing. We had a look in the main entertainment room but decided not to go in, for one there was no tables free by the time we got there on the Monday evening (7pm) and also it completely lacked atmosphere.

The nisa shop on the complex was not bad, it had a good range of items and wasn't too expensive. Although there was practically no choice in wine and the corkscrew we bought from there for the very reasonable price of £1 broke as soon as we tried to open a bottle of wine with it.

The location of the accommodation was fine. We didn't really go on to the beach as it was cold and windy while we were there but we went into southport and enjoyed having a look around there, particularly nice walk down the pier. And there is a great play area near the pier which both of our little ones loved. Overall we enjoyed being away, but I definitely wouldn't go back and I am not too sure that I would stay at a pontins again unless it was for a couple of nights and we were guaranteed a decent double bed. If I was staying with a group of friends and we were planning on getting drunk for the whole weekend then this would be pretty acceptable, however I would still only say 3 people per apartment.

Never go for a 1 night stay

We arrived the Pontins resort was packed with people having breakfast.

Our checkin was 4pm. We spent the day there and on the beach. At 4pm ques began to form for checkin this was the beginning. By 7.30pm we still had no room after 4 hours of waiting around. Eventually we were given a key to a room 210. We went to the room only to find people were in our room playing loud music and we could smell drugs being smoked. We went back and reported this to reception. At 8.30pm we were given another room which was by then a total waste of a day out. Don't bother asking for compensation as they just ignore you Awful experience. Never Again.

Costa del Southport!

After reading the most horrendous reviews and booking on a whim, I was terribly apprehensive about staying at this complex.

On arrival, the paintwork looked a bit dated but I was absolutely amazed by the activities that greeted us. I rang the complex twice before arriving asking them to ensure that the apartment would be spotless due to reading the reviews and they assured me that they would be. This is honestly a child's heaven. Go karting, inflatable centre, crazy golf, trampolines, 3 play areas, indoor arcade, indoor play centre. The place is just incredibly entertaining. When arriving into our room, I'll admit they don't look anything special from the outside. They resembles blocks of flats. However I was so impressed with the cleanliness and the available facilities. Through booking with laterooms, we saved £18 by not having to purchase the linen and did not have to pay for the electricity and even got a voucher for a free bottle of wine from the on site Nisa shop and a free family breakfast in the on site pub. The bedding was not in the apartment so I rang the on site manager, who delivered it within 5 minutes. The blue coat entertainers were so lovely with my daughter and she had the best best best time. I booked two nights and instantly added two more nights to my stay. Very sad to leave, could honestly spend the whole summer here. The beach is honestly two minutes walk away and it is beautiful. I could not have asked for a better holiday.

Good and bad points

The room was fairly clean with all the essentials so we were satisfied with that, the staff were also pretty friendly and helpful so again happy with that however, the breakfast we had certainly wasn't upto scratch my partner wouldn't even eat it I ate a little but most of it went in the bin and the eating area wasn't the cleanest.

I would probably stay again for a night or two if the price was right although i'm not sure my partner would

Rough and ready family fun!

Absolutely fine for a fun family getaway.

Accommodation was a little shabby and the mattresses have seen better days, but there was everything we needed there.

short break felt like forever to end

From the moment I checked in it was one problem after another.

I was given the key to an occupied apartment before finally getting a vacant room. The furniture was broken in the apartment. Staff were rude and confrontational. The park itself is very tired and a lot of the equipment is broken or does not work properly. The restaurant food was excellent though and a real treat, that said, the outlet food providers were rather poor with little hygiene.
