Room was not clean crisp packet and chocolate wrapper on floor between beds.
No towels in room. One bed so bad could not be slept the other fine. Whole hotel dated and not clean. Gaffer tape holding the carpet together in several places. Would not return
Does the job
I enjoyed my stay as I am rather a fan of "faded glory" hotels.
Infinitely preferable to chains. Room was huge, with excellent large flat screen TV and very comfortable bed. Bathroom very 70s but plenty of hot water. Breakfast let down only by cheap ingredients, but plenty of cereal choice, fruit, yoghurts, toast, and usual range of cooked offerings (although all buffet style except drink).
Bedroom had been refurbished and was clean.
The shower door could not move and the toilet roll on opposite wall to toilet would be better re-sited. Having said that the room was comfortable but 2 flights of stairs and no lift is hard work when carrying cases. Receptionist very friendly and obliging. Breakfast was ghastly with clingfilm covering dishes that are displayed on a filthy heated trolley. You could hear staff talking & laughing presumably in the kitchen about complaints made by customers. The building needs extensive refurbishment and will cost millions but while it is still open then it could be tarted up for the benefit of customers just scrubbing the entrance steps would help.
The Royal Hotel
Pleasant hotel with nice and friendly staff.
Excellent value for money
The hotel is a fine building, given a grade 2 star listing, which means the interior is protected as well as the exterior.
The reason is because it is a rare Greek revival building of 1826. The decor is appropriate, with Zoffany wallpapers and chandeliers, but like many hotels it is a little worn and needs redecoration, hopefully in a traditional rather than a minimalist style, although spotlessly clean, and everything in the bathroom works. The staff were helpful and the very competitive room rate includes a cooked breakfast. As a fan of old architecture I like staying here and have a further three nights booked soon. The garden is teetering on the verge of being out of control, which entirely suits the place. Friendly and helpful staff. Very comfortable bed and a spacious room. Very good value compared to some of the ghastly motels locally which are more expensive.
Stayed in room 265 for Friday and Saturday nights.
Large room which was clean, very comfortable bed and situated at back of hotel, which I believe is quieter than the front. Had booked 5 other rooms for family members, all differing in sizes and quality. Beds differed greatly. Some had very thin lumpy mattresses and others like us had good quality mattresses. Breakfast was great. Lots of good food. The hotel itself could do with updating, looking very tired. Our room was quite dark, a bright paint job would give it a great lift. The staff were all very pleasant and helpful. Couple of minutes walk from the town which has plenty of pubs/restaurants to eat.
I do take into consideration they are undergoing work but I was put off straight away by the grubby side entrance provided, so uninviting and dirty.
Polite lady on reception but needed to have a second row provide as key would not work. The mattress was so old and worn , it was springy , uncomfortable and made a noise when turning. The breakfast was not cooks to order and average quality, sausages were cheap and horrible.
You will get a large helping of old style luxury not often seen in these days of 21century bling.
See for yourself. You will not be disappointed.
the royal hotel
Nice outside old building lots of character sadly once inside the building that changed drastically – was originally booked for 3 nights after 5 minutes entering the room if I could have found an alternative I would have booked out right away.
The front of house manager was immediately on the defence – suggesting that the hotel was use to such complaints, the room was very dated, paper peeling off, a smell coming from the bathroom and the bed was positioned next to a shelf one side and a light hanging from the wall on the opposite, either way you turned you would bag your head. Service was OK breakfast wasn’t so bad, shame the TV belonged in the dark ages and the wifi was abysmal
Basic/Clean/Get what you pay for :)
Room 266 - Hot tap gets stuck and is a struggle to turn off.
Shower heat control knob is faulty and requires a lot of jiggling about to operate. Other than that... All good. Beds comfy. Room is warm and quiet. Complimentary tea/coffee/biscuits/ect are a nice touch. Thanks
