tired and shabby - but great staff
Front rooms have zero mobile reception, and very poor wifi
All rooms I've stayed in have been very tired - whole hotel is rather shabby - but certainly good enough for the price
Good breakfasts, very kind, helpful staff
Entire hotel is utterly unsuitable for anyone with any mobility problems - no lifts, many stairways with no handrails
Only hotel in Ashby, so probably rests on its laurels

Shabby hotel, excellent staff
Hotel is shabby, rooms are tired, some poorly laid out, appalling quality wifi, some rooms have very poor mobile reception so can't use own mobile broadband
Both rooms had no working shaver point/light
Breakfast doesn't start until 07:00, so difficult to get an early start
On one morning had alter breakfast, quality was good, but even as early as 08:30 no scrambled egg nor mushrooms left
Staff very friendly and helpful

Nostalgic trip to Ashby
The Royal Hotel has an 'old world charm' about it. Obviously it has seen better days over the years and is now an historic building in Ashby. Having said that, it is a beautiful old place that has a way of making you feel 'at home'. We spent two days there and the place was made more special by the very friendly and attentive staff who went the 'extra mile' to make our stay comfortable (especially Mandy on reception). For the money it represents great value, it is clean, comfortable, very friendly and relaxing. Stay with an 'open mind', don't expect Claridge's and you will enjoy it.
The buffet breakfast was fantastic!

Disappointment
Extremely disappointed with the room we were allocated. The Royal Hotel did not live up to expectation. Paint was flaking off the skirting boards and the window which also had a crack. Wallpaper was hanging off the wall and the duvet was lumpy and uneven.
