Spend just a wee bit more and get a better quality of hotel and service.
My partner and I arrived to check in at 3pm to be told (eventually as no one was present at check in desk when we arrived) that check in would be 4pm as the room wasn't ready.
We left our luggage and headed into town for an exhibition and a meal. Note that to go to town costs £5 in a taxi or £1.50 each by bus.
After a wonderful meal in Darcy Thompson's I received a phone call asking us to return to the hotel to check in - this was now 7pm. We got another taxi to the hotel then checked in. As we were led down a dark corridor with wallpaper hanging from the walls we were relieved to see that 1st impressions of the room weren't too bad. The bed looked decent. With further inspection we discovered that the toilet/shower room door didn't close, there was a hole in the wall above the bed, the toilet appeared to be attached to some kind of engine that made a ridiculous amount of noise when flushed - so much so we refrained from flushing after dark to not wake up neighbouring guests. None of the wifi codes worked and our potential long lie was cut short as check out time was 10am - a tad early considering check in is at 4pm. Still, we figured that with breakfast included it could be value for money. Breakfast was help yourself cereal boxes and half a loaf of bread for toast. Some pastries were also available but didn't look too appealing. As expected no one was present to check out or complain to so we made our way back to the city. At £60 this is a reasonably priced hotel but adding bus and taxi fares brings the price up to around £80 so really a false economy as you can get a decent central hotel for this price.
Very helpful and pleasant staff on arrival.
Room was reasonably clean but as it is an old building the floors were very slanted and wobbly. Furniture dated. The room was warm but the bathroom was positively glacial. We did get breakfast the first morning, which was included in the price, but had to fight to get something on the next 2 mornings as the staff had not been informed that we needed breakfast.
Lack of communication, even although we confirmed this with 2 members of staff. Probably due to some booking sites including breakfast and others not.
Overall it was Ok but I would not rush back.
