Great Reception staff and customer service, the rest needs a LOT of work

I have to say for the money I wasn't expecting a whole load, just somewhere quiet to rest at the end of the day.

The staff on reception were very friendly and helpful. The buildings and rooms look as if they haven't been updated since the 80's although the water was hot , there was a working TV, clean towels and free Wi-Fi. The room was warm and despite being on the main road, fairly quiet from road noise. The hotel gives a slip with information, including local taxes numbers, which was very useful. In the room there is a desk, draws and wardrobe. The carpet in the room was badly fitted and loose and looked as if it had been overlaid on top of an old one. Light bulbs were out and the bathrooms could do with a deep clean, the bathroom had a significant amount of black mould in certain places and the extractor was broken. A bit of a scrub in the crevices and fixing the extract would stop this. The bed creaked very badly and the matters and pillows were lumpy and not terribly comfortable.

The main issue I had was the noise across the floor, there seemed to be a number of guests including a group of teenagers who took it upon themselves to party from 23:00 onwards. They seemed to have crammed 3 people into a room and at one point the whole room shook as whatever they were doing caused something/someone to fall into a wall. Being a fairly young person myself I can remember what it was like to be away from home and parental supervision, but post midnight I rang the reception, who came up and told them to be quiet.

This lasted for maybe an hour or so before I was again woken up and I resorted to ear plugs. 4am and I was forced to call down again, especially as I could smell smoke. I cannot fault reception as they were up straight away. Conversation still carried on and I went back to the ear plugs. Again I cannot fault the reception staff who were extremely polite the next morning, and it turned out that I was not the only one who complained (although the only one who rang at the time).

The second night was much improved as the kids had gone although there was a lingering smell of smoke across the floor.

Given a clean and a refresh, the hotel could be ok at the budget end of things, but in balance I will stay at a chain next time. If the staff had not be so great and the kids gone the second night, I would have probably lost the money and moved hotels. I don't blame the hotel for the other guests, but the noise does carry.
