The Upper Reaches

Great location, staff very friendly and helpful.

Food excellent, room a bit tired in decor but very warm and comfortable.

Faded glory

Beautiful location and friendly staff who could not have been more helpful.

The fabric of the building needs a little TLC and the food was OK rather than being special. But as we only paid £110 per night for two people dinner B and B everything was amazing value.

Great location and nice hotel.

The Hotel was very nice and to be honest of very high standard.

The cost was just a little high considering the minor hiccups. i.e. my shower took about 10 minutes to get warm (I almost thought it wouldn't), and a few other things but they were minor. The food was great.

Friendly and welcoming

The staff obviously enjoy their jobs, which is always a good sign.

Missed a Sunday newspaper, but otherwise all fine.

Great location. Hotel has loads of potential

The location is brilliant.

Right on the river just on the edge of town. The hotel looks great from the outside and the reception and public areas are in good condition, a mixture of old and modern well done. The room was in the newer part of the building. This is clean, but looking a little tired. Overall I think the hotel is good for its three star rating, but I think with a little work on some of the details it could become four star.....I would happily return some time. Abingdon itself though was a little disappointing. Like the hotel, it needs a little work

OK but beware of work being carried out

The hotel is undergoing some badly needed updating and isn't the cleanest hotel I've ever stayed in.

The room itself was fine but the public areas were not - not only where the work was being carried out but generally throughout the hotel, including the dining area.

Unexpected Pleasure

Tucked just off the main street this is a really nice place to stay, especially the restaurant which has a water wheel visible in it.

Good service and nice breakfast, plus a real can-do attitude from the staff made my one night stay a real pleasure.

Lovely place to stay

Very much enjoyed my stay, and a 1 minute walk to the Abbey!

A birthday treat

The upper reaches hotel is in a lovely position overlooking the river thames, sadly, it is in need of some upgrading.

The reception was unwelcoming, the restaurant was dark and cold. We stayed in two rooms (9 and 31) both had very comfortable beds and had been cleaned to the best of the cleaners ability. Sadly again, the room itself was overcrowded and shabby - bare carpets, dirty windows, poor toilet fittings. Staff tried to be helpful but most were unable to speak english and at every meal time got our food orders slightly wrong. (e.g. Sausage egg, bacon and tomatoes, arrived as either only egg, bacon and tomato, or sausage, bacon, beans and hash brown!) The food was very poor, despite the claim that fresh local produce was used. Our Ham, Eggs and Chips was a piece of bacon overcooked and dry with two hard eggs and a pile of McCain chips. On our last evening, the Fried fish had batter so hard you could not get a knife through it) Despite getting a 'half board' deal which sounded like a bargain, we were left saddened that such a lovely looking hotel provided such a poor three night stay for ourselves and our two friends.

The sight of the chef and two waiters smoking outside the door to the kitchen did not add to our enjoyment. What also saddened us was the fact that there were visitors from Holland and France in the hotel and one couple who said they had only eaten breakfast at The Upper Reaches before deciding to go elsewhere for their other meals. Sorry to be so negative, but as I said at the beginning, the Hotel needs quite a lot of updating and upgrading, if this is done it would be a perfect venue for visitors and holidaymakers, rather than the funeral wake's advertised in our bedroom!
